‘Twin Peaks’ Season 4: David Lynch Says It Could Happen, but Not for a While
David Lynch says it’s possible that Twin Peaks may return, but fans shouldn’t get their hopes up for more episodes anytime soon.
Lynch recently took questions via video at the Belgrade Culture Centre, and when he was asked if there will be a fourth season of Twin Peaks, he said that it’s possible but that it would take a while.
“It’s too early to say if there will be a fourth season of the series,” Lynch said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “If that were the case, we would have to wait a few more years because it took me four-and-a-half years to write and record this [season].”
That’s certainly not a definitive “no” in regards to the show coming back, but it’s clear that a hypothetical fourth season wouldn’t happen for years if it happens at all.
With Twin Peaks: The Return, though, the idea was always to produce one season on Showtime, not to bring the show back and have it continue into the future.
“It was always intended to be one season,” Showtime president and CEO David Nevins told Deadline in August. “A lot of people are speculating but there’s been zero contemplation, zero discussions other than fans asking me about it.”
So Lynch apparently never even had a conversation with Showtime about the possibility of the show continuing. That said, Nevins specified that the door is always open for David Lynch if he wants to do more, but Nevins wasn’t sure at this point whether Lynch would even want to do it.
It’s certainly understandable why Showtime would be interested in more Twin Peaks, as The Return gave the network its biggest day of weekend signups ever, according to Deadline.
Kyle MacLachlan said shortly after the finale of Twin Peaks: The Return that there are certainly no ongoing conversations about continuing the show.
“Well, I know for a fact there are no discussions for more Twin Peaks,” MacLachlan said after the finale aired. “That’s where that is.”
In another interview with The Hollywood Reporter, MacLachlan again said that he’s had absolutely no conversations about any more Twin Peaks. That said, he did say he loves playing Agent Dale Cooper, and it’s difficult to imagine that he would say no if David Lynch asked him to return for more.
