Twin Peaks: The Return may not have marked the end of the series, according to actress Sherilyn Fenn.
NME spoke to the cast of the show this week and asked them about the possibility of a fourth season. Sherilyn Fenn, the actress who portrays Audrey Horne, revealed that David Lynch said during production of The Return that he might want to do more.
“During filming David said he had such a great time that if it came up he might do it again,” she said. “But he also said it would take years…He’s said he’s interested, but who knows?”
On the other hand, Michael Horse wasn’t quite as optimistic, saying he seriously doubts there will be fourth season.
“I don’t think it’ll happen,” Horse told NME. “I think David’s kinda done. It’s died in its glory, like James Dean. But then I didn’t think this one would happen!”
James Marshall, meanwhile, told NME that he’s not allowed to talk about whether there will be any more episodes, although he made clear that he’d be interested in returning if the show comes back.
David Lynch has not publicly expressed interest in doing a fourth season of Twin Peaks. The closest he’s come is saying last month that it’s too early to say either way and that a hypothetical fourth season would take a while.
“It’s too early to say if there will be a fourth season of the series,” Lynch said in September. “If that were the case, we would have to wait a few more years because it took me four-and-a-half years to write and record this [season].”
Sherilyn Fenn noted while speaking to NME that it’s possible that it would be easier to write a fourth season of Twin Peaks, since Lynch wouldn’t have to get back in the groove after a 25 year break. But Lynch certainly isn’t one to rush a project like this, and so fans definitely shouldn’t get their hopes up to see any more Twin Peaks on the air in the immediate future. If Lynch started writing Season 4 right after The Return ended, and it took as long as The Return did to make, the new season wouldn’t be finished until 2022.
A lot of fans feel that The Return was a fitting ending to Twin Peaks, and it doesn’t seem like more episodes was something that was ever discussed during its production. Kyle MacLachlan said last month that there are no conversations being had about Twin Peaks Season 4.
“Well, I know for a fact there are no discussions for more Twin Peaks,” MacLachlan told Deadline. “That’s where that is.”
