Twitter Praises Nick Cannon for Joining Minneapolis Protests
In cities all over the country, citizens are taking to the streets to protest the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in Minneapolis police custody. Nick Cannon joined in the Minneapolis protests, and now Twitter is praising the celebrity for taking action.
Nick Cannon is an advocate for social justice
Many know Nick Cannon as an actor, rapper, radio host, and as the host of The Masked Singer. But the 39-year-old is also a fierce advocate for social justice and equality. And he’s been vocal about his support for the Black Lives Matter movement for years.
In 2017, Cannon wrote a poem about the movement. In an interview with Pret-a-Reporter at the time, he said he wished he didn’t have to keep reiterating why black lives matter.
“People were like, ‘We’re tired of you guys saying Black Lives Matter,'” Cannon said. “I’m tired of having to say it. I don’t want to sit back and debate statistics and how many people are killed. Killing is just wrong in general. Life is a life. This nation is hurt. It’s broken and we’ve got to fix it. It takes all of us to do it.”
He joined the Minneapolis protests
On May 25, 46-year-old George Floyd was killed when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for over eight minutes. Floyd — who was unarmed and not arrested for a violent crime — repeatedly pleaded with the officer to allow him to breathe. The incident was caught on camera and resulted in an eruption of protests all over the country.
Cannon joined in the Minneapolis protests, wearing a t-shirt reading, “Please, I can’t breathe.” On his Instagram page, he shared a photo from the protest holding up a sing with Floyd’s picture that reads, “Justice for Floyd.” In another Instagram post, he is seen standing in front of a line of armed guards, with the caption, “Stop Killing Us.”
Twitter praises Nick Cannon for his advocacy
While many celebrities are sharing messages advocating for justice, Cannon is actually putting himself on the frontlines. And his actions didn’t go unnoticed by Twitter. And many took to the social media platform to praise Cannon for his advocacy.
“MAJOR shoutout to Nick Cannon for being a real one and for being on the frontlines at these protests,” one Twitter user wrote. “A REAL ONE.”
Some pointed out that the star has a medical condition, but still put himself out there to fight for what’s right. “Nick cannon always been real,” another user tweeted. “This man has lupus which puts him at a higher risk of getting Corona and he still out here showing his face in ongoing protest while these other celebrities sitting around.”
Cannon has gotten a fair share of flack over the years, mostly stemming from criticisms about his rap music. But after seeing him front and center at the protests, some have concluded that Cannon’s dedication to his community outweighs all else.
“Is Nick Cannon a corny rapper? Yes,” wrote a Twitter user. “Is he a corny person? Sometimes. But as a Black man, he always steps up for the people. He created wild n out so his friends “could have jobs” And now risking his life to protest.”
