Good Morning America packed the Aug. 19 episode with explosive star power. Perry slid into the 8:30 a.m. segment right after pop diva Mariah Carey’s interview, but before her live performance.

“How the h*ll you put me on after Mariah Carey,” Tyler Perry chastised the Good Morning America team, channeling Madea through his vocals. Perry had a hearty laugh along with the morning show hosts before launching into their discussion about his upcoming Emmy honor.

Perry will be recognized for his work at the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards when he receives the Governors Award. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. According to the Emmys, each year the Board of Governors of the ATAS “grant one award to an individual, company, organization or project for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences or management of television which is either of a cumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to go beyond the scope of the Emmy Awards presented in the categories and areas of the competition.”

When expressing his thoughts about being selected, Perry said, “First of all, I’m blown away that the Governors would choose me for this award. So, to have that level of recognition is pretty awesome, and I’m really excited. So, I’m just taking it in day by day. I can’t wait to get there. I’m actually going to show up. They can have it in a cornfield in Iowa,” he jested. “I will be there because this is a moment that I want to take it all in.”

Morphing into his distinct Madea persona, the actor remarked, “Well, yes. I had this dress made by Coco Channel. My next-door neighbor’s name is Coco, and her daughter is Channel, and they sew. So that’s my dress. Thank y’all.”
