‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 2 Is Official

Netflix has made an official announcement: The Umbrella Academy has been renewed for Season 2. The series, which is based on the Dark Horse comic book of the same name, will bring back the Hargreeves for yet another dynamic adventure. Though we don’t have much information just yet, here’s what we know so far about The Umbrella Academy Season 2.

For those who haven’t seen it, here’s what you need to know: The Umbrella Academy is a comic book created by Gerard Way, the lead singer of every emo kid’s favorite mid-00s band, My Chemical Romance. There are three series, The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite, The Umbrella Academy: Dallas, and The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion, the final issue of which was recently published in March 2019.

What happened in The Umbrella Academy Season 1?

While we encourage you to watch the show for yourself to decide if you’re interested, here’s a bit of a teaser. The series follows the Hargreeves family — a group of orphans who were all born on the same day in 1989 under mysterious circumstances. There are (were) seven Hargreeves children, all of whom possess unique powers which were honed in their childhood by their less-than-loving adopted father.

Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy sees the now-adult Hargreeves reunite after years apart in order to attend their father’s funeral. A lot has changed, and they soon find themselves forced to work together to take on an enemy they couldn’t have foreseen.

Season 2 has been announced

The ten-episode first season was released in full on Netflix on Feb. 15, 2019. It quickly became a hit for the streaming service, with its star-studded cast including Ellen Page, Mary J. Blige, Robert Sheehan, and many more. So it was only a matter of time before an official renewal.

On April 2, 2019, Netflix shared a video clip on Instagram from the final moments of Season 1, which left the location (in both time and space) of the Hargreeves’ up in the air. The caption reads, “Umbrella Academy. Season 2. The dysfunction continues.”

What could happen in Season 2?

The first season followed the basic structure of the first comic book series, though it added in elements of the second series. So how will this work when it comes to translating the show into a second season, which, we can assume, will also consist of ten episodes?

It’s hard to say, but the way things ended in Season 1, there is still a lot of territory left to explore. While the antagonists may be altered, the second series offers plenty of exciting paths for the show to take, many of which involve time travel.

Additionally, the comics make more references to the Hargreeves’ having adventures as children. Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy did have flashbacks, but no actual missions for their younger counterparts. Hopefully, we can get a little of that in Season 2.

There’s one big mystery that may never be solved

Throughout Season 1, Klaus (Sheehan’s character, also known as “The Seance” in the comic books) is visited by the spirit of Ben. Ben was also one of the Hargreeves children but died at some point before the events of the series began. His death is a mystery both in the comics and the series so far, and it’s unknown whether the question will ever be answered. Hopefully, this is one deviation Netflix will make from the comic origins.
