A quick recap: The Umbrella Academy Season 1 told the story of the Hargreeves siblings. Not actually related, they were seven children adopted by the wealthy Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who sought to train them to use their very unique abilities. They all reunite following his death and must work together to prevent the pending apocalypse.

The first season was met with much acclaim. A second season was announced in April 2019 and began filming a couple of months later. In February 2020, the show’s social media accounts began to post content advertising the next season. In May, the premiere date of July 31 was revealed. The trailer dropped on July 8.

It draws from the second comic in the series, ‘Dallas’

The Umbrella Academy is based on a comic book series. The first limited series, simply titled The Umbrella Academy, was used as the basis for season 1. However, it dipped into the second limited series, The Umbrella Academy: Dallas, with the inclusion of Hazel and Cha-Cha, and Klaus’ Vietnam storyline.

But from the trailer, it appears this season is even more about Dallas, right down to the specific location. And after all of the retro promotional material, it may come as little surprise to fans that the main characters have time-traveled back to 1963. November 1963, to be exact — the month that John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

All of the Hargreeves siblings return, including Ben

Naturally, all of the Hargreeves are a part of the story, though it looks like it will take them a little time to find one another. The time traveler, Five, is tasked with preventing the apocalypse (again), and he’ll need Vanya’s sound waves, Luther’s super strength, Allison’s power of persuasion, and Diego’s aim. Oh, and Klaus and Ben can also help.

Though he wasn’t as prevalent in season 1, it looks like Ben, who died when they were kids, will be around this season. Of course, he can’t be there without the help of Klaus, who can talk to the dead (and even give them corporeal form). Perhaps we’ll get to know more about Ben and how he died this season.

The trailer also revealed that Pogo is back — sort of

All in all, the trailer offers a lot of new information. Plus, there’s one character that fans were shocked to see: Pogo, the talking chimpanzee and Reginald’s closest confidante, who died when Vanya confronted him in the season 1 finale.

This Pogo looks to be a bit different. Because they’re back in 1963, he’s a younger chimp. And given the love for young, non-human characters like Baby Groot and Baby Yoda, it’s not surprising that fans are happy about this twist. “Is that Baby Pogo? I’m going to cry,” wrote one Twitter user.
