‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Season 3: 10 Spoilers, Secrets, and Teasers
The TV show, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows a young woman who is rescued after a cult leader kidnapped her and kept her in a bunker with three other women. It also happens to be a hilarious comedy that is coming back for a third season.
In the third season Kimmy is going to college, Lillian is dealing with her breakup from Robert Durst, and Titus is about to go all “Lemonade” when he thinks his boyfriend is cheating on him.
The Cheat Sheet caught up with some of the show’s cast members at 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. There, we talked to Sara Chase who plays another woman from the bunker, Cyndee Pokorny. When asked if her character finds love this season she answered, “There’s no love for Cyndee this season unfortunately but that’s good because some people need to be by themselves for a while.”
But what about the other characters from the show? The Cheat Sheet talked to Lauren Adams who plays Gretchen Chalker and here are 10 things she revealed about the new season and her character.
1. Kimmy’s marriage to the Reverend could ruin her friendships
Q: Can you give us a hint as to what Gretchen’s reaction will be when she finds out Kimmy is married to the Reverend?
“That’s interesting,” said Lauren Adams. “I don’t know the timeline and if she already knew in the bunker or if she hasn’t found out yet, so I guess I want to know the answer to that question because if she already knows maybe that’s why there isn’t tension between them. And if she doesn’t know yet she’s gonna be mad when she finds out!” Adams then continued, “I don’t wanna be there for that. I guess I have to be [laughs].”
2. Gretchen is climbing the ranks in a new cult
Q: Your character seemed lost and was trying to find a new group. You said she’s still struggling. Is it the same problem or a new struggle?
“It’s a little bit of a new struggle,” explained Adams. “It’s like kind of the same problem, different struggle because she hasn’t gotten herself out of cults just yet.” She continued, “She’s struggling with a different aspect of it. She’s moving up the ladder.”
3. But that doesn’t mean she has gone to the dark side
Q: So is Gretchen power hungry?
“Well you know it’s interesting with Gretchen,” said Adams, “it’s not that she’s necessarily power hungry, but she’s just community hungry. She’s looking to find people, family, like-minded members.”
4. We don’t get to see Gretchen’s family in Season 3
Q: Do we see her family?
“Not in Season 3, no,” answered Adams. “We get some in Season 1 and 2. We get a little insight into her parents.”
5. Kimmy will probably be the only one getting a collegiate education this season
Q: Do you see your character also furthering her education, like Kimmy?
“Maybe not at the collegiate level [laughs],” answered Adams. But that doesn’t mean her character won’t change. “I don’t know if she’s growing, but I think maybe she learns from Kimmy in a nice way. So that’s really something.”
6. Gretchen won’t be joining Kimmy in therapy
Q: Therapy is a big part of the show, will Gretchen be getting any?
“Yeah, not for Gretchen unfortunately in the way she should be getting it,” said Adams. It’s too bad, Gretchen and therapist Andrea Bayden would be an interesting duo.
7. Tina Fey gave Adams an important acting tip
Q: What have you learned from Tina Fey while working on the show?
“I have learned so much,” answered Adams. “It’s hard, it’s also my first TV show. It’s a completely crazy and incredible master class. The best thing I learned from her that I have put into practice the most, is that you don’t want to be last to set because everyone waits on you and I just think that’s a good indication as to how thoughtful she is about the entire team.”
8. Adams never improvises on set
Q: Do you ever just improvise?
“Never! They write the best jokes. I could never write a joke as well as they have,” said Adams.
9. The rest of the cast doesn’t improvise either
Q: Does anyone else improvise?
“Not to my knowledge,” answered Adams. “The script is pretty tight when we get down there. Those jokes — there’s so many. It’s so dense. We gotta talk fast just to keep them in there.”
10. Jon Hamm is pretty amazing this season
Q: What is it like working with Jon Hamm?
“He was wonderful, such a pro!” said Adams. “He has a huge monologue first thing and he was incredible. He was great.”
