‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Star Ellie Kemper Reveals Her Motherhood Hack for ‘Messy’ Mornings

Ellie Kemper — best known for her roles on The Office, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Bridesmaids — is much like her the characters she portrays: optimistic, chipper, and full of smiles. While her characters Erin and Kimmy are (mostly) single and without kids, Kemper is married with two young children. Despite the change in her lifestyle since becoming a mom, she still finds time to take in little pleasures for herself and maintains her upbeat attitude.

Ellie Kemper and her husband Michael Koman had a slow start

Kemper grew up in St. Louis, went to Princeton, and eventually moved to Los Angeles where she became an intern on Conan O’Brien. There she became friends with comedy writer Michael Koman.

“I was an old intern, and he was a young writer,” she said.

Though the two are happily married now, their relationship wasn’t exactly smooth sailing from the start and had many misfires.

Kemper said in her Vanity Fair profile piece: “There was a part of me that was like ‘No time for love! I have to focus on my career!'” Kemper and Koman, still just friends at the time, didn’t talk for two months after their first conversation about becoming a couple.

It wasn’t until she checked on him when he was homesick from the show that the lines of communication were opened again.

Once they were officially dating and things were getting serious, he just couldn’t seem to land the proposal. Koman brought up the topic of marriage several times before proposing in a way that seemed legitimate.

“Michael, I love you, you did not propose well…” Kemper said to him on the Today Show.

Kemper and Koman married in New York City in 2012, and several of Kemper’s castmates from Bridesmaids were in attendance.

Kemper’s first son, James is three years old, and her youngest son, Matthew is just a few months old. Despite being tired, Kemper has shared that she takes comfort in realizing that she’s not alone.

“After you have a baby, you find all these other parents who are going through exactly what you’re going through,” she said.

After the birth of James, Kemper was a guest on the Halloween special of The View and shared how motherhood had changed her perception of the greatest city in the world. She said: “I had no idea how many germs threatened my son. All of a sudden New York went from being a wonderland to a germ forest… Everything becomes a threat once you have a baby.”

Though she said this in her usual upbeat way, she didn’t seem to be joking and shares a point of view many parents can relate to. Being a new mom is not all bad, however. Always a child at heart, she did say that she loves that she can once trick or treat for Halloween candy once again.

Ellie Kemper shares her tips for “messy mornings”

Kemper shared that mornings with young children can be messy, chaotic, and stressful. Having a second child only made things more difficult.

“Going from one kid to two has rocked my world. I feel like I’m half-conscious,” she told Huffington Post. So how does she cope?

“The way I get through those mornings is stealing a moment for myself. Just sipping a cup of coffee and letting my brain be empty for a minute, but also, kids are funny! So, they’ll say something and it just changes everything, thank goodness!” she told Page Six.

True to her reputation, she gave a very down-to-earth and honest answer that is solid advice for any parent, famous or not.
