Here’s When the New Season of ‘Veronica Mars’ Premieres On Hulu

This is not a drill, Marshmallows: New episodes of Veronica Mars are on their way, and we finally have an official date to put in the calendar. The Kristen Bell-led cult hit series has experienced a lot of ups and downs over the years but has now had new life breathed into it. Here’s what you need to know about the premiere date, the plot, the new (and returning) characters, and much more.

Veronica Mars originally aired in the early ‘00s

For those just getting ready to jump on board (like Pretty Little Liars creator I. Marlene King, apparently), here’s what you need to know: The UPN noir dramedy series Veronica Mars originally aired from 2004-2007. This was during the now-defunct network’s transition to become the CW after it was purchased by Warner Bros., which is part of what led to its cancelation after three seasons.

The show follows the titular Southern California teenager who is very adept when it comes to solving mysteries (her father is a P.I., after all). There’s romance, drama, witty remarks, and some seriously intense investigations that occur. The series ends without a major resolution during Veronica’s first year of college.

Its cult following led to a crowdfunded movie

After the series was canceled, creator Rob Thomas went on to work on shows like Party Down and iZombie, while Bell became famous with Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Gossip Girl. But the fan love for Veronica Mars never died down. So in 2013, when Thomas, Bell, and other cast members started a Kickstarter campaign, it was funded in record time.

The resulting film, simply titled Veronica Mars, came out in 2014. While it was well-received by most fans and critics, Thomas conceded that because they funded it, the project was a lot of fan-service, and not necessarily indicative of how he saw the franchise moving forward.

There will now be a limited series revival

It took a few years to get things together, but in 2018, it was announced that a limited Veronica Mars revival was in the works. The eight-episode season features Bell back in her hometown of Neptune, CA, solving a mystery that takes place during Spring Break.

The series will air on Hulu, and that’s not all — the streaming service also got the rights to the previous three seasons and the movie, so all will be available to watch before the July 26 premiere of the new season. Hopefully, that date will be announced very soon.

Who will be in the Veronica Mars limited revival?

This is the big question. As of publication, many of the original Veronica Mars characters will return, including Veronica’s love interest, Logan (Jason Dohring); father, Keith (Enrico Colantoni); best friend, Wallace (Percy Daggs III); and sometimes-ally Weevil (Francis Capra).

Additionally, several notable actors have been cast in new roles, such as Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place), Patton Oswalt (A.P. Bio), and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash). And because this is a mystery show, there could be even more surprise cameos being kept under wraps, if we’re lucky.
