‘Veronica Mars’ Reboot: Which Characters are Returning?

After a long wait, Marshmallows everywhere will get a much-needed dose of Veronica Mars. The original series, which ran on UPN/CW between 2004 and 2007 was popular enough to garner a small but dedicated cult following.

Kristen Bell, who played the title character in the original series, announced that filming for a Veronica Mars reboot began in November of 2018. It wasn’t until earlier this month, however, that fans received their first teaser trailer – and got an official release date.

The reboot is set to premiere on July 26, 2019. Hulu has ordered the production of eight one-hour episodes, and fans are eager to know what to expect.

Will the old favorites be returning, and what new faces should Marshmallows expect to see? Is there anyone from the original series who won’t be returning? Here’s what we know.

Kristen Bell is still Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars just wouldn’t be the same without its starring actress, Kristen Bell. She made the show what it is, and when the reboot was first announced the very first question on everyone’s mind was whether or not she would be reprising her role.

Everyone can start cheering now (or breathing a sigh of relief), because Bell will definitely be continuing her role as Veronica Mars.

Other returning favorites

Most of the original cast have confirmed their returns. This includes Enrico Colantoni in the role of Keith Mars (Veronica’s dad), Jason Dohring as Logan, and Percy Daggs III as Wallace.

Also slotted to return are David Starzyk (Dick Casablancas’ father), Max Greenfield (Leo D’Amato), and Francis Capra (Weevil).

Who isn’t returning for the ‘Veronica Mars’ reboot?

While nobody has released a definitive confirmation that they will not be returning to the set for the long-awaited Veronica Mars reboot, there are a few key characters from the original series who have not made statements either way.

This includes Tina Majorino in the role of Mac, Ryan Hansen in the role of Dick Casablancas, and Chris Lowell as Piz.

Which new faces have been added to the cast?

In addition to some old favorites, the casting list for the Veronica Mars reboot includes a number of new faces.

This includes Patton Oswalt (Happy!), Dawnn Lewis (iZombie), Clifton Collins, Jr. (Westworld), Izabela Vidovic (Wonder), and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve).

What will the new ‘Veronica Mars’ series be about?

According to Hulu, the newest season of Veronica Mars will be about “Spring breakers… getting murdered in Neptune.” This, of course, kills the tourist industry in Neptune, which is something the seaside town’s economy relies heavily on.

“After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pigs the enclave’s wealthy elites… against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.”

Do new fans need to watch the old episodes?

Thanks to the style of the reboot, many new fans are wondering if they need to go back to watch the old seasons.

While it isn’t entirely necessary, it is highly suggested. A lot of what goes on will rely heavily on the same themes, situations, and places as the first three seasons. It is also thought (although not confirmed) that there will be a lot of references made only true OG Marshmallows will understand.

If new fans do want to catch up by watching the first three seasons of Veronica Mars, they can do so on Hulu. The streaming service has announced to plans to stream the first three original seasons beginning this summer. This should give people a chance to binge watch the first three seasons before diving into the reboot.
