4 Video Game Rumors: Nintendo NX Launch Lineup

Like anything popular enough to spark rabid fandom, the video game industry is full of secrets. Companies wait for just the right time to announce new games and hardware in hopes of making the biggest splash possible. Fans, for their part, want to know everything that’s coming down the line as soon as possible. In that kind of environment, video game leaks and rumors are bound to trickle out. This week we’ve uncovered five rumors and leaks that have a decent chance of being true. So follow along as we try to suss out which ones are most likely to be true.

1. Are these games releasing near Nintendo NX launch?

The website MCV reports that “sources close to Nintendo” have leaked information about first-party games coming to the Nintendo NX. According to the report, within the first six months of the NX’s release (March to September 2017), the NX will get new Zelda, Mario, and Pokémon games.

The Zelda game we already knew about, because it’s the only game Nintendo has announced for the NX yet. In all likelihood, that game will come out in March alongside the launch of the NX. As for Pokémon, it’s possible it will be an HD version of Pokémon Sun/Moon, the same pair of games set to launch on Nintendo 3DS this fall, but it will probably be some other take on the Pokémon universe. As for Mario, there’s no way to know what that game will be, though many fans are hoping for a new installment of the Super Mario Galaxy sub-series, or something of a similarly grand scope.

As for whether or not this rumor holds water, it’s unclear. What is clear is that Nintendo’s development teams have been hard at work on unannounced games. The dearth of Wii U games this year makes that clear.

2. Which Ubisoft games are coming to NX?

Despite a leak that blew the shroud of mystery off the Nintendo NX, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the upcoming console. Chief among the questions is what games we can expect to see on it. Aside from the new Zelda game, an upcoming Sonic game, and Ubisoft’s Just Dance, nothing else has been announced.

To pique players’ interest in its upcoming game lineup, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently promised that, in addition to Just Dance, the company has “other surprises” in the works for NX that it will announce later. Could we finally see Beyond Good and Evil 2 or a new Rayman? Or, if the NX is powerful enough, might Ubisoft go all out and release upcoming games like For Honor or Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands on it? We’ll have to wait and see.

3. What is Rockstar working on?

Really, if developer Rockstar Games wanted to, it could probably coast for years on the success of Grand Theft Auto V. Here we are, quickly approaching three years since the game’s release, and it remains near the top of the bestselling games list each month. That’s pretty astounding.

But Rockstar is not just hanging out and eating Doritos while the cash rolls in. Instead, as parent company Take-Two reported during a recent financial call, “Rockstar Games also is hard at work on some exciting future projects that will be revealed soon.”

One of those projects is almost certainly the leaked sequel to Red Dead Redemption, a game that’s reportedly almost finished. As for what else the company could be working on, it’s anyone’s guess. Could it be a new Max Payne or a sequel to the 2006 cult classic Bully? Maybe it’s the seemingly forgotten-about game Agent or else something entirely new. We’ll have to wait and see.

4. Is a StarCraft HD remaster in the works?

A Korean news site reports that developer Blizzard is preparing a high-definition remastered version of the original StarCraft to release this fall. The official announcement will apparently come either at BlizzCon in November or during the StarCraft 2 World Championship Series finals in September. The original strategy game launched in 1998 and has spawned two sequels over the years. The new version will reportedly have new graphics and an improved user interface.
