‘Vikings’: Why Lagertha Is the Queen We All Deserve

History’s Vikings is full of formidable warriors. None of these hold a candle to Lagertha, played by Katheryn Winnick. She’s not only a fierce shield-maiden unafraid to fight in battle. She’s also a powerful queen in her own right. Throughout the years, she’s proven that she is the queen that we all truly deserve. She fights for what’s right, even when it might not be what everyone else wants.

From a farmer to a queen

Lagertha was the first wife of the famous Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel). A farmer born from other farmers, she never forgets her roots and uses it to propel her dream for her people into the future. Though she is a beautiful woman, she is so much more than that because she’s a fierce fighter and advocate for Ragnar, even after their divorce. It’s no wonder that Rollo (Clive Standen), Ragnar’s brother, is still in love with her.

Lagertha was tested early on while left alone in Kattegat and still married to Ragnar. A man petitioned her for help when another man came to stay at his house with his wife. Nine months later, his wife gave birth to a child. He is concerned about the paternity of the child. When Lagertha learns of the name of the visitor, Rig, she insists that he is a god by the name of Heimdall. She tells the man that it is a great blessing bestowed on them and that he should in no way harm the child or his wife. If he does, he’ll deal with Lagertha directly. She fights for her personal beliefs and doesn’t let anyone try to alter them.

She takes what she wants

Lagertha isn’t one to let a slight hold her back. She takes her revenge in time once she’s weighed out all of her options. After Ragnar disgraces her and gets Aslaug pregnant, Lagertha leaves Ragnar and divorces him. She wasn’t about to deal with that situation. Eventually years later, she gets her revenge on Queen Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) by taking back her rightful place as the ruler of Kattegat. She kills Aslaug, knowing she can never forgive her for destroying her entire world so many years ago. She becomes the Queen of Kattegat and her people are better off under her rule.

She respects and loves Ragnar enough to let his sons live

Lagertha could have killed Queen Aslaug’s sons by Ragnar, but she insisted they live. Even after many of them try to kill her, she refuses to fight them or harm them for the love she feels for Ragnar. She knows their lives are important to him, and not to mention they are her own son’s brothers. She saves them and even forms a friendship with Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith).

She is connected to Ragnar Lothbrok

She is always keenly aware of what Ragnar wants even after his death. She stays true to his vision and rules the people of Kattegat the way they deserve to be ruled. Her connection with Ragnar lasts long after he’s gone. She even sees him on his way to Valhalla. He’s always in the forefront of her mind. She keeps his legacy alive even after everything he put her through.

Lagertha is a formidable force to be reckoned with. She’s the queen that Kattegat deserves. She isn’t afraid to fight for her beliefs or her family. She is arguably the most capable ruler on the series. Vikings will return for a final season sometime before the end of the year.
