Vin Diesel Paid Tribute to Groot Cosplayers At the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Premiere
Actor Vin Diesel has certainly made an impression during his time in Hollywood. From his feud with The Fast and the Furious franchise co-star Dwayne Johnson to his recent confirmation that he will be in the upcoming Avatar films, he’s clearly a fan of big-budget movies and sequels.
But Avatar 2 won’t be his first time playing an alien (of sorts) — for years, Diesel has provided the voice of Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s what he said about the role and his respect for Marvel fans at the Avengers: Endgame premiere.
Diesel is never seen on screen, but he’s there
Diesel made his entrance into the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy, voicing the character Groot, a large, tree-like creature who becomes a member of the group. He continued to provide the vocals for Groot even when, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Groot is now much smaller, referred to as Baby Groot (technically, the child of the first Groot). Diesel also voiced Teen Groot in Avenger: Infinity War, though he was a victim of Thanos’ snap.
He came to the Avengers: Endgame premiere in a tree-like jacket
Diesel was interviewed at the Endgame premiere on April 22, 2019. The focus was, of course, on his outfit: He wore a jacket made to look like bark, very similar to that of Groot. Though it was very hot, he was willing to do it — for the fans.
“This is the way I see it: As a lover of Comic-Con, I know how these cosplayers really engage and how they really commit,” said Diesel. “For something like Groot, I always like to participate.”
Additionally, Diesel noted that “no trees were harmed” when making the jacket, despite its very realistic appearance of bark. Interestingly, this coincided with Earth Day; he said, “There’s one constant in all of us no matter how divided we are: We all love this planet.”
This isn’t the first time he’s done this
When he says he “always like[s] to participate,” Diesel is referring to the other MCU premieres in which he’s donned Groot-inspired attire, including his very first one back in 2014, where he proved that he’s dedicated to the character.
“At the first Guardians of the Galaxy premiere in London I wore the stilts — I was seven and a half feet tall. I was feeling my Grootness then,” said Diesel. “And then for Avengers [Infinity War], I added that jacket.” He continued with his thought process for this costume, saying that he wanted to wear “a cool jacket that kind of speaks to the Groot-esque qualities of all of us.”
Will Groot be in Endgame?
Like the rest of those lost in the Decimation, we can only assume that Groot will return in his teenage form, should the Avengers succeed in reversing the effects of Infinity War. The question then becomes: In what form will he appear in the recently revitalized Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? We didn’t get a lot of Teen Groot, but if the movie takes place a while down the road (it probably won’t premiere until 2022), it would make more sense to get an adult Groot to close out the trilogy.
