Wait, Did We Already See the ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 Premiere?

This Is Us fans freaked out when the season 4 fall finale left everyone hanging with new information and massive cliffhangers on Nov. 19. Of course, this is not exactly new. The NBC drama has teased a number of telling flash-forwards in the past. But now, it seems the writers just gave away the This Is Us Season 5 premiere, nine episodes ahead of the fourth season finale. And basically, it’s time to start paying attention.

We’ve got some good news if you love This Is Us and have been worried about the NBC show’s cancellation. In the midst of the third season, This Is Us was renewed for another three seasons. According to Deadline, NBC Presidents of Scripted Programming, Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, expressed the network’s excitement for three more seasons.

“In a television landscape with nearly 500 original scripted series, there are very few, if any, that have the critical and cultural impact of This Is Us, and we couldn’t be more proud to bring fans three more seasons of a show that so well represents the NBC brand,” Katz and Pakosta said. “A huge thank you and congratulations to our executive producers, cast and crew who reach new heights every week with the show’s inventive and compelling storytelling.”

Now, a three-season order of This Is Us gives the series at least six seasons before coming to an end. The three renewed seasons will also be 18 episodes each. Therefore, there will be a season 5 of This Is Us and it will be 18 episodes long.

What happens when ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 premieres?

As any This Is Us fan will tell you, every premiere kicks off with Kate (Chrissy Metz), Randall (Sterling K. Brown), and Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) birthday. Now, the Big Three just celebrated their 40th birthday nine months after the Thanksgiving episode, as seen in the season 4 fall finale flash-forward. But does this mean fans have already seen the This Is Us Season 5 premiere?

Following the This Is Us Season 4 fall finale, executive producer Isaac Aptaker revealed fans will return to the events shown in the flash-forward.

“We have started every season so far with the Big Three’s birthday in the present day,” Aptaker told TV Guide. “That cabin sequence that Rebecca arrives into is their 40th birthday, so that would suggest that’s where we’re going to start Season 5. People won’t have to wait too long for answers in the flash-forwards. That’s coming up right away at the top of next season.”

Then in an interview with TV Line, Aptaker explained This Is Us won’t delve deep into Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) status until the fifth season.

“Every year, our stories pick up on our characters’ birthday, so that’s a jump ahead for their 40th birthday, which is a jump ahead to our Season 5 premiere,” he said. “So everyone’s questions about Rebecca and her status and how things have progressed will be answered by the beginning of next season, because we’ll have caught up to that very moment.”

It’s also likely fans will also find out more details about the fall finale flash-forward when season 5 premieres. When TV Line asked whether or not the mother of Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) child will be introduced when the show returns for season 5, Aptaker just teased that many storylines will be addressed.

“Just keeping in mind that is their 40th birthday at the cabin that we flash-forward to, we have a history of every season starting with their next birthday,” he said. “So that is all stuff we will be addressing in early Season 5.”

‘This Is Us’ Season 5 release date

As of this write-up, NBC has yet to reveal the This Is Us Season 5 release date and time. However, it’s possible to predict the potential air date, based on previous seasons.

The first four seasons of This Is Us made their debut in September. And given the drama’s 18-episode run, it’s likely the network will release the fifth season around the same time in 2020. So it’s possible new episodes for This Is Us Season 5 will start premiering on a Tuesday in September 2020.

Nevertheless, fans still have to wait until This Is Us Season 4 finishes its final nine episodes. The winter premiere airs on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2020. And ultimately, it seems viewers will watch the Pearson family as they approach the events of the fall finale flash-forward.

When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Aptaker revealed the second half of This Is Us Season 4 will illustrate how the Pearsons get to the season 5 premiere, including Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) falling out.

“That is something that you are going to have to wait and see when we get back to that time,” Aptaker said of Kevin and Randall’s fight. “But because we know it is our fifth season premiere [as each season begins on a Big Three birthday].”

He continued: “We’ll see the rift, see the falling-out, see how it all happens over the back half of the season and into the beginning of next. It’s all coming up in the very immediate future for the show; this isn’t something that’s going to be a long wait.”
