‘WandaVision’ Star Kathryn Hahn Breaks Down Agnes’s Vital Role In the Marvel Disney+ Series

Week two of WandaVision and fans can’t get enough of Kathryn Hahn. Two episodes of the Marvel show premiered Jan. 15 on Disney+ and introduced fans to the wild sitcom world. Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are living in ’50s and ’60s television sitcoms, with Hahn as their wacky neighbor, Agnes. Subsequent episodes promise to explore every decade of sitcoms, and Disney+ already released photos of Hahn in ’80s legwarmers.

Hahn was part of the WandaVision Zoom press conference on Jan. 10. She broke down the vital role Agnes plays in Wanda and Vision’s sitcom fantasy. New episodes of Marvel’s WandaVision drop Fridays on Disney+.

Marvel’s ‘WandaVision’ needed a nosy neighbor, and Kathryn Hahn was happy to play her

Just about every sitcom has a nosy neighbor who wanders in next door at the most inopportune times. Hahn was happy to fill that role on WandaVision as Agnes.

“In a-in all those classic sitcoms, there’s always that person that busts through the doors and sits on the couch,” Hahn said. “You never get to know anything about them. They’re there so I think, in that classic way, I was able to walk into it as Agnes just like with all those beautiful tropes set up behind me to just build on.”

Agnes provides a level of comfort to the chaos of Marvel’s ‘WandaVision’

Agnes may be a foil for Wanda and Vision’s life. However, for the viewers, she’s intended to be comfort. Viewers expect characters like Agnes, and Marvel shows should be no exception.

“I feel like what the sitcom is always represented is this kind of like aspirational view, this kind of comfortable like ideal,” Hahn said. “The trick was not only were we trying to just kind of [reflect] life within each decade, but present this kind of comfortable ideal. The structure of a sitcom, which is the set up, the misunderstanding and the resolution, is such a comfortable, comforting little structure.”

WandaVision isn’t actually making fun of that structure. Marvel is bringing it back.

“I’m a kid of the ‘80s,” Hahn said. “That’s just baked in. The trick was to not satirize it, but to get inside of each one. That’s what I think was, tonally, such a trick to pull off which I’m still so blown away by Matt [Shakman] and by Jac [Schaeffer] being able to do that because that’s difficult tonally.”

Kathryn Hahn once had a neighbor like Agnes in real life

The nosy neighbor is a TV trope for a reason. They really exist and Hahn knew one long before Marvel’s WandaVision.

“We did have a neighbor that was very much like this as well, that would pop over unannounced,” Hahn said. “We would definitely pretend to be excited to see them and it was always the worst timing. So yes, for sure.”
