‘War of the Planet of the Apes’: Everything We Know So Far
War of the Planet of the Apes is still a ways off from release, but audiences are slowly starting to learn a little more about what they can expect from the coming installment. While details surrounding the movie’s storyline have yet to be disclosed, Fox recently announced the addition of several new cast members to its latest Apes pic, as well an official release. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming film so far.
1. The general plot

Details of the movie synopsis are being kept tightly under wraps, so we don’t know much about the plot other than that it will continue the story of Caesar, the evolved ape who is brought to life via motion capture by Andy Serkis. But director Matt Reeves did hint at the War of the Planet of the Apes story in broad terms while promoting Dawn last year. “As this story continues, we know that war is not avoided by the end of Dawn. That is going to take us into the world of what [Caesar] is grappling with. Where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever wanted to deal with, and was hoping he could avoid,” Reeves said.
He also commented on how War will bring Caesar’s story full circle. As he explained,”…The first film was very much about his rise from humble beginnings to being a revolutionary. The second movie was about having to rise to the challenge of being a great leader in the most difficult of times. This is going to be the story that is going to cement his status as a seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost biblical status. He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses.”
2. The behind-the-scenes team

In addition to having Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Reeves (seen above) back behind the camera, the latest Apes installment will welcome back several other members of the last movie’s creative team. Mark Bomback, the scribe behind Dawn and other action-oriented films like The Wolverine and Insurgent, will return to pen the screenplay. Meanwhile, Chernin Entertainment and Dylan Clark will once again serve as producers on the developing project.
3. The villain

In September, it was announced that Woody Harrelson has nabbed one of the leading human roles in the new Planet of the Apes installment. Again, specific details about exactly who he will play haven’t been revealed, but THR reports that The Hunger Games star will portray a villainous character called the Colonel. It’s the first lead role from the movie to be filled. No other major players have been formally announced yet.
4. The supporting cast

Aside from Harrelson, the only new cast member that has been officially announced is Gabriel Chavarria. The actor is a relative newcomer to the Hollywood scene, having previously appeared on the shows East Los High and Aquarius. Originally, it was announced that Chavarria had signed on for a lead role, but THR’s latest report indicates that the part is actually relatively minor. Though Chavarria will be portraying a new character, the name or other pertinent details surrounding the nature of the role have yet to be revealed.
War of the Planet of the Apes begins shooting this fall in Vancouver and is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 14, 2017.
