What We Know About WarnerMedia’s HBO Max Streaming Service

There’s a new kid coming to the streaming block, courtesy of WarnerMedia. Last November, telecom giant AT&T announced that it would be launching a three-tier streaming service in 2019. Its acquisition of Time Warner morphed into the WarnerMedia brand, the entertainment umbrella that houses properties belonging to Warner, HBO, and Turner.

With access to content from WarnerMedia, parent company AT&T is looking to elbow out the competition. It’s widely known that Disney and Apple will be launching their own services. Right now, viewers adore their Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon subscriptions, but WarnerMedia wants to make its own mark in the streaming world. The platform finally has a name and purpose, and thou shalt refer to it as HBO Max. Confused? Let us help you out.

It’s not just HBO, it’s much more

While the name might sound like a supplementary HBO offering, the platform will allow users to watch content from HBO, Cartoon Network, TBS, TNT, CNN, CW and more, all in one place. In a press release announcing the service’s name, WarnerMedia highlighted the fact that content will be available for all ages. Fans can look forward to watching old favorites like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Pretty Little Liars, and Friends. Yes, those reports of WarnerMedia snatching Pretty Little Liars and Friends from Netflix are true.

“HBO Max will bring together the diverse riches of WarnerMedia to create programming and user experiences not seen before in a streaming platform. HBO’s world-class programming leads the way, the quality of which will be the guiding principle for our new array of Max Originals, our exciting acquisitions, and the very best of the Warner Bros. libraries, starting with the phenomenon that is ‘Friends.’”

Cost of HBO Max and when it will launch

According to Fortune and other reports,  a monthly subscription for HBO Max will be between $16-$17, but no rate has been confirmed. It is thought that there will only be one tier for pricing instead of three. For the sake of comparison, Disney Plus will be $6.99 per month, Netflix offers $8.99 for basic and $12.99 for its popular mid-tier option, and Hulu dropped its ad-based plan to $5.99 a month. Amazon Prime account holders can pay $119 for the year or $12.99 per month for Prime Video.

Set to launch in spring 2020, HBO Max will be a standalone offering separate from HBO GO and HBO NOW subscriptions. Currently, HBO NOW is $15 per month for HBO-only content, so users will have to sign up for HBO Max to access HBO and everything else.

What viewers can watch

As mentioned above, a number of TV shows, movies, and other content will be accessible through HBO Max. WarnerMedia says more than 10,000 hours of content will be at fans’ disposal. Movie lovers will find blockbusters like Wonder Woman, A Star is Born, and Harry Potter in the HBO Max library. In addition to shows and movies that you’re already familiar with, expect original programming as well such as the new Gremlins series.

New programs include Lovecraft Country, a series produced by J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele, The Nevers, helmed by Joss Whedon, and an updated version of Perry Mason from Robert Downey, Jr. That’s just a sampling.

We should know more about HBO Max by the end of the year or early next year as WarnerMedia ramps up promotions for the service. For now, consumers have time to decide which streaming platforms are worth their money and viewing hours.
