Was Daisey Ridley Behind the Leak of ‘Star Wars’ Film Script?

No fans are as obsessive as Star Wars fans. People who enjoy Star Wars are desperate to know what The Rise of Skywalker is about, so they spent the past few months analyzing every detail of the film’s trailers. Disney is very secretive when it comes to Star Wars, but fans almost got ahead of the studio when a script of The Rise of Skywalker leaked on eBay. Here’s how that happened.

J. J. Abrams gets candid about ‘Star Wars’ leak

Although he’s been asked numerous questions about the making of The Rise of Skywalker, J. J. Abrams generally remains mum about important details regarding the film. However, he was uncharacteristically candid about the script mishap. According to The Wrap, he said “[Disney was] really nervous about anything getting out, and so they had only a handful of scripts, and they were printed on crazy, uncopy-able paper.”

Abrams added “One of our actors, I won’t say which one — I want to, but I won’t — left it under their bed and it was found by someone who was cleaning their place. And it was given to someone else, who then went to sell it on eBay.” According to the director, Disney “got it back before it sold.”

Daisy Ridley speaks out

Abrams’ comments led fans to speculate who almost allowed the script to fall into the wrong hands. Some theorized Daisy Ridley was behind the leak. She discussed these rumors during an appearance on Good Morning America. “Now I’m not gonna throw the person under the bus who it is, but there is someone else potentially coming on the show this week who can answer the question as to who that was. It wasn’t me.”

According to TV Guide, John Boyega set to appear on the show on Nov. 27, 2019. It’s interesting Ridley said someone else might reveal who accidentally leaks the script. Some feel she is implying Boyega was behind the leak.

Something similar happened with ‘Return of the Jedi’

This is certainly not the first time the plot to a Star Wars film leaked before its release. According to the book Mad About Star Wars, something similar happened prior to the release of Return of the Jedi. Three months before the film premiered, a Lucasfilm employee was taking a copy of the film to an editing house when she stopped to run an errand. When she returned to her car, she was dismayed to find she had been robbed. Among the items stolen where the film canisters containing Return of the Jedi.

Lucasfilm was fully prepared to see a copy of the film emerge on the black market. This would have been awful for the company, as one of the main selling points for Return of the Jedi was that fans would be able to see how the story of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker ended. If the world knew the ending of the film before its release, would people want to see it?

That was a question the company never had to answer. Fortunately, no copy of the film ever emerged on the black market. Mad About Star Wars asserts the thief was probably unaware what the film canisters contained. While the world may never know who stole the canisters, we will probably only have to wait a short while to find out who allowed The Rise of Skywalker‘s script to leak.
