Was It a Mistake to Give the Next ‘Star Wars’ Movie to ‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff?

If you’ve been on the internet over the past few days, then no doubt you’ve seen the overwhelming backlash over the last season of Game of Thrones. Things got so bad after the finale aired that fans started to petition to give the show a redo—and so far, it’s earned thousands of signatures.

The problems with the latest GoT season are numerous. It all started with episode 3, ‘The Long Night.’ Fans complained the whole thing was too blurry and difficult to see. Things spiraled out of control after that and fans just kept finding fault with everything that happened, from errant Starbucks cups to their dissatisfaction with how the season ended.

For obvious reasons, Star Wars fans were skeptical when they found out that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were tapped to take on the newest Star Wars film. Was that a brilliant decision by Disney, or an epic fail?

Their unpopularity might be a benefit

The new Star Wars film isn’t slotted to debut until 2022, so fans have plenty of time to forget just how angry they are with Benioff and Weiss’ creative direction on GoT. But as journalist and Star Wars enthusiast Ryan Britt points out, the fact that people hate them right now could be beneficial.

As he says, “In terms of perception, they won’t be creating a Star Wars film from a place of confidence, but instead — maybe — from a place of having something to prove. If the ending of Game of Thrones ends up being objectively ‘bad,’ then at least half the people who go see the Star Wars movie in 2022 will have this ‘fact’ in their minds.”

Fans are predicting the new ‘Star Wars’ movie will be like ‘The Force Awakens’

Not every Star Wars movie is good, but one notable exception is The Force Awakens, which was directed by J.J. Abrams. The interesting similarity between his story and that of Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss is that they were both chosen after their popularity plummeted. For Abrams, it happened in the final seasons of the show Lost.

The bottom line is that all directors have high and low points in their careers, and no one will do everything right all the time. Benioff and Weiss have proven themselves from their early work on Game of Thrones—that’s why they were tapped for Star Wars in the first place. Just because the final season of GoT didn’t receive much love, it doesn’t mean this creative duo should be banished from Hollywood. They deserve another chance. And now they’re getting one.

The ‘Star Wars’ universe provides plenty of new material

There’s another good reason why Benioff and Weiss should be celebrated instead of shunned. While fans are already acquainted with how they handle Westeros, Star Wars is a whole new world—literally. The two stories may be based in fantasy, but that’s where the similarities end. Taking on the Star Wars franchise will no doubt bring tons of new creative energy from this pair.

2022 can’t come soon enough!
