Was Jill Duggar’s Husband, Derick Dillard, Fired From ‘Counting On’? What’s His Job Now?
We’ve been watching the Duggar family since TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting — and to this day we can’t seem to get enough of what they’re up to next. It all started with Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, two ultra-conservative and religious parents who were known for imposing super strict rules on their 19 children. Through the years, we got the chance to watch the kids grow up in the household, become adults, and even marry and create families of their own. And though 19 Kids and Counting was cut short at the height of the Duggar family’s fame, we still get to watch most of the original cast navigate life in TLC’s Counting On.
Fans have noticed one member of the Duggar family who used to be a part of Counting On missing from the show, however — and that Duggar is Jill. Though she’s certainly mild-mannered, it seems her husband, Derick Dillard, may have gotten them fired from the show. Here’s what happened.
Derick Dillard was fired from TLC after transphobic tweets
It’s clear Derick is right in line with the Duggar family when it comes to their religious beliefs — but, unfortunately for him and Jill, he took things way too far on social media back in August 2017. At the time, TLC was promoting their new show, I Am Jazz, for transgender woman Jazz Jennings. Instead of showing support for a fellow TLC star, Derick took to Twitter to retweet the original post and add the comment, “What an oxymoron… a ‘reality’ show which follows a non-reality. ‘Transgender’ is a myth. Gender is not fluid; it’s ordained by God,” People reports.
Derick was then criticized by fans for his transphobia, and he continued by misgendering Jazz in another tweet. “I have nothing against him,” he added, fully knowing Jazz identifies as female. “I only have issue with the words and definitions being propagated here.”
It wasn’t long before TLC stepped in by issuing a statement of their own. “Derick Dillard’s personal statement does not represent the views of TLC,” the statement read. Soon enough, both Jill and Derick stopped making appearances on Counting On.
Derick claims he left the show on his own accord
TLC made their stance against Derick’s behavior known on Twitter — and it’s clear the network had let him go completely. As the network announced, “We want to let our viewers know that Derick Dillard has not participated in Counting On for months and the network has no plans to feature him in the future. … TLC is proud to share the story of Jazz Jennings and her family and will continue to do so.”
As for what Derick had to say for himself, he’s denied his firing and instead has insisted he and Jill left on their own accord. In Touch Weekly reports he wrote on Twitter, “They won’t tell you that I was fired because I wasn’t. We wanted to leave and they didn’t want us to. That’s the truth.”
Unfortunately, Derick didn’t stop with the Twitter attacks after the Jazz Jennings scandal, either. He’s also attacked the stars of Nate & Jeremiah by Design for their same-sex marriage and how they’re raising their daughter. As for Jill, while fans are sad to see her go, People reports she added a photo on Instagram stating you can disagree without being hateful and you can love without always approving of the choices of others. Unfortunately, fans didn’t love this response, as one commented, “Tell that to your hateful husband.”
What’s his job now?
Not only was Derick roasted by fans for his transphobic and homophobic comments, but they’re also all wondering what he does all day now that he’s fired from TLC. In Touch Weekly reports he announced on Instagram that, after a long stint of unemployment, he was driving students around for a weekend workshop at the Student Leadership University’s Lift Tour 2018. And now, he’s made it clear he’s going to law school. As for other full-time work, however, it’s a mystery to everyone.
Jill has taken to social media to announce how proud she is of her husband’s hard work, however. On Instagram, she wrote, “He gets up early to head out before traffic gets bad, works all day, then comes home after most people and puts out more energy to invest in our boys and me!” This left fans even more confused about what he’s up to.
