Was ‘The Conners’ Canceled or Will It Be Renewed for Season 2?
The Conners was a show created out of the dramatic endings of Roseanne. The 1990s television sitcom was originally slated for a long-lasting reboot, but Roseanne Barr’s untasteful tweets had the producers canceling the show. The result? The reboot only ran a single season, with the final episode pulling in a mere 10.3 million compared to the higher 22+ million earlier episodes had.
The Conners is a spin-off, featuring the lives of Roseanne’s family after her tragic off-screen death from an opioid overdose. Most of the major players of the original series are there. The children are all grown up, have kids of their own, got married or divorced, etc. Although nobody could be certain how well the spin-off would do, it actually exceeded expectations.
Now there are millions of fans wondering if this first season was the only one they get, or will there be more? Did The Connors get canceled or will it be renewed for a second season? Here’s what we know.
Sara Gilbert is hopeful for season 2
Sara Gilbert stated in a recent interview that she is “hopeful that there will be a season two, especially since season one ended with a cliffhanger.” Gilbert, who stars in the show as Darlene (the youngest daughter of Dan and Roseanne) is also an executive producer. She was one of the driving forces behind a Roseanne reboot, and behind The Connors spin-off.
While nothing is confirmed as of yet, there should be word soon on whether that second season will happen – and a lot of people are hoping it will. But what is that big cliffhanger that Gilbert is talking about?
The big cliffhanger on ‘The Conners’
The last season ended on what was actually a two-part cliffhanger. The first part was obvious. Darlene mentioned that she was considering moving to Chicago (and away from her family) with her new boyfriend, Ben. That would throw the whole family dynamic out of whack, as the Connor family has always been known to be close.
But a second part of that cliffhanger wasn’t as obvious. Although there were a few small, easily missed hints in the show itself, it’s what ABC has been saying behind the scenes that have fans on the edges of their seats. It is rumored that ABC will be bringing back Johnny Galecki, or has been trying to. Galecki played the part of Darlene’s now-ex-husband, David.
In the original Roseanne series, David and Darlene built up a lot of history. In every way, their young lives were intertwined and the world thought they were going to last forever. The chance to bring him back would be a good reason to have a second season in itself – and it would throw quite the monkey wrench into Darlene’s moving plans.
Laurie Metcalf is also hopeful
Laurie Metcalf plays the role of Jackie, Roseanne’s sister, in both the original Roseanne series and The Connors. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she said much the same thing as Sara Gilbert – that she is hopeful there will be a second season.
Metcalf had this to say: “I believe it’s going to happen. I think we’ll do between ten and thirteen episodes, something like that. I think the tone will be the same, but I love not knowing what’s coming up at all.”
What should fans expect if season two happens?
Without the second season being confirmed, much of what fans might expect is pure speculation. It is almost a definite that Johnny Galecki will at least make an appearance. Fans will also find out whether Darlene decides to make her big move – which most hope not. Other than that, fans will just have to wait and see.
