Watch Prince Harry Get Emotional as He Remembers Keeping Meghan Markle’s Pregnancy a Secret

The first trimester of any pregnancy is a scary time. Because so much can go wrong during the first few months, many parents opt to keep the pregnancy a secret until they are further along.

This need for secrecy only increases when it comes to royals. When a royal announces that they are having a baby, there is so much fanfare surrounding the pregnancy that it’s important for the couples to get as far along in the process as possible before making a statement.

So, for the first few months of being pregnant, only those close to the royal couple typically knows about the baby.

And in Prince Harry’s case, that time was extremely special for him and his wife Meghan Markle.

Meghan Markle’s pregnancy announcement

It’s been a little over a year since Markle announced her pregnancy. She had just arrived in Australia for her first royal tour when she and Prince Harry shared the news with the world.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” the palace said in a statement on the Kensington Royal Instagram. “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

Prince Harry gets emotional

While giving a speech at this year’s WellChild Awards, Prince Harry got emotional thinking back on the time when he and Markle had a little secret.

“Last year, when my wife and I attended, we knew we were expecting our first child — no one else did at the time, but we did — and I remember…” he started before tearing up.

“I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day,” he said. “And more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time.”

Since becoming a parent himself, the Duke of Sussex has discovered a newfound respect for the parents and caregivers of the children honored by the awards.

“And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heartstrings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own,” the Prince continued.

The audience aptly applauded Harry for the sentimental moment.

What are the WellChild awards?

The WellChild Awards are a yearly event, honoring children with serious illnesses and their parents and caregivers. WellChild was one of the charities that the Duke and Duchess asked people to donate to in lieu of sending presents to commemorate the birth of baby Archie.

Prince Harry has been a patron of the awards since 2007 and Markle joined him at the ceremony for the first time last year.

The pair also attended a pre-ceremony reception and met with the winners and honorees of the evening.
