Wendy Williams Explains Viral ‘Fartgate’ Incident On Her Show
Queen of gossip Wendy Williams is usually the one talking about the latest celebrity scandal, rumor, or update. She’s no stranger to being in the hot seat herself, but for the past week, the shoe was placed on the other foot and has remained there. Williams has been in the headlines about her divorce, the “girl code violation” with NeNe Leakes, Joaquin Phoenix, and now “#Fartgate.”
Internet believed Williams cut one on the show
There have been plenty of viral moments in the last few days, but you may have missed the one about Wendy Williams passing gas on her show. Dubbed “fartgate,” the incident had people cracking up and doing double takes in disbelief.
During her “Hot Topics” segment on Jan. 17, Williams was busy discussing Odell Beckham Jr.’s legal woes, but mid-sentence, there was an audible sound resembling the passing of gas (we’re being polite). Fans believe the talk show host broke wind on TV and doubled down on their assessments based on how she was leaning and sitting in her chair.
The jokes have been non-stop ever since, with some calling her “Windy,” or saying, “How you pooin?” Others are noting the look on her face and pause in her speech, and of course, there are memes. No one is letting her live this down.
Williams addressed it on her show
Aware of all the attention about the viral flatulence event, Williams talked about it on her Jan. 23 show, vehemently denying that she did the deed. On the screen behind her was the word “Fartgate.”
“Let me tell you something right now, ok? I don’t lean over like this to release a fart, I lean over like this because it’s comfortable. If I sit like this all the time, it’s heavy on my spine. I like to release my hips and lean. I’ve been doing this for 11 years on this show.
I have never farted once on this show. As a matter of fact, I barely fart, you know why? Gas gets released several different ways and mine is belching because all I do is talk.”
She then joked that she would have claimed it if she’d done it because “farts are always funny. I went on with the story, and you know a girl like me would’ve been laughing at that.” Then Williams took it a step further by adding that the way it sounded, she would’ve needed to change her clothes afterward because it would’ve left a mark.
So, who was the culprit?
Someone from Williams’ team came out and explained that the source of the noise was from something going on backstage. He stated they were setting up for a chemistry experiment segment using a hose and fish tank, but the hose was the problem. Because they didn’t have the proper one, it kept making “sputtering” sounds as if someone was farting.
Fans are still having a chuckle about it, and William’s “Hot Topic” coverage of the incident has only made some more suspicious. Whether she did it or the equipment backstage was responsible for it, she’s a meme forever over it.
