Wes Anderson’s New Movie ‘The French Dispatch’ Features a Lot of Familiar Faces

Fans of quirky indie comedies have a lot to look forward to next year. The French Dispatch, director Wes Anderson’s first live-action feature film in six years, hits theaters in 2020, and the cast includes a lot of familiar faces. Regular Anderson collaborators like Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman will appear in the movie, which has been described as “a love letter to journalists.”

So far, we don’t know a whole lot about The French Dispatch. But the cast list alone is enough to make any Anderson fan salivate. Murray will play a character named Arthur Howitzer Jr., according to IMDb. It’s no surprise that he’ll pop up on screen, given that the comedian has appeared in every Anderson film since 1998’s Rushmore.

The cast also includes Owen Wilson, who has appeared in all but two of Anderson’s 10 films, and Jason Schwartzman, who has been in seven. Adrien Brody, Bob Balaban, Mathieu Amalric, Willem Dafoe, Frances McDormand, Saoirse Rona, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Fisher Stevens, and Wally Wolodarsky have also worked with Anderson before and are back for this movie.

There are also a few first-time Anderson collaborators

In addition to many actors he’s worked with previously, The French Dispatch also introduces some new people to the Anderson fold. Timothée Chalamet will play a character named Zeffirelli, according to IMDb. Elisabeth Moss, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Benicio Del Toro, Jeffrey Wright, and Rubert Friend are also in the movie. So are French actors Guillaume Gallienne and Lyna Khoudri.

Westworld’s Wright couldn’t reveal too many details, but in an interview with Bevy Smith last year, he did say he was thrilled to work with Anderson. “I couldn’t wait to dive into this thing, because it will be a gear shift from some of the stuff I’ve been doing,” he explained.

What is ‘The French Dispatch’ about?

The French Dispatch was filmed in Angoulême, France, last spring. It’s set in a fictional 20th-century French city and focuses on a series of stories published by a magazine called The French Dispatch. When the film was first announced, it was rumored to be a musical, but that’s apparently not the case.

In an interview with the French publication Charente Libre, Anderson revealed a bit about the film’s plot.

“The story is not easy to explain,” Anderson said, according to IndieWire. “[It’s about an] American journalist based in France [who] creates his magazine. It is more a portrait of this man, of this journalist who fights to write what he wants to write. It’s not a movie about freedom of the press, but when you talk about reporters you also talk about what’s going on in the real world.”

The Oscar-nominated Anderson’s last movie was 2018’s stop-motion animated film Isle of Dogs.
