‘Westworld’ Season 2 Might Feature Roman World and Medieval World

Westworld Season 2 will apparently include glimpses into two other parks: Roman World and Medieval World.

At the Vanity Fair Summit this week, series creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were asked why they decided to not include Roman World and Medieval World in Season 1. According to Deadline, Nolan responded, “We had to save something for Season 2.”

That could just be his way of acting coy and telling viewers that they have to tune into Season 2 to find out whether these parks come up, but it sure sounds like confirmation that the show will be giving us at least some sort of a glimpse at these other worlds in the second season. In the original 1973 film upon which Westworld is based, there are three other parks that patrons can visit. In addition to Westworld, there’s also Roman World, Medieval World, and Samurai World.

The finale of the first season of Westworld hinted at the existence of other parks, with Samurai robots being seen in the episode in addition to a logo with the letters “SW.” It has been speculated that we’ll see more of Samurai World in Season 2, and at Comic-Con over the summer, Jonathan Nolan asked fans how much they want to see Samurai World in Season 2. But there has not actually been any confirmation that we’ll see this park in the second season.

This tidbit about Roman World or Medieval World possibly being in Season 2 was particularly surprising because Nolan and Joy previously denied that we would see those parks. When asked at New York Comic Con 2016 if we would see Roman World or Medieval World, Nolan simply said, “No.” But it’s possible he just meant that we won’t see them in Season 1, or perhaps plans changed since then. Given the success of Season 1 of Westworld, it wouldn’t be surprising if HBO gave the creators a bigger budget for the second round, enough to spend on depicting other parks.

Based on the trailer for Season 2, it does look like the show will be spending the vast majority of its time in Westworld, but perhaps we’ll get a brief glimpse into the other parks at some point. We do know for sure that Season 2 will show us a bit of the world outside of Westworld, whether that means showing us other parks are showing us what society is like back on the mainland.

“I think one of the things we’re excited about for the second season is that beyond Westworld, you’re going to get a look at the real world [outside the park].” Nolan told TV Insider. “Season 1 was ambitious. But Season 2 will be twice as ambitious in terms of scope and scale.”

Westworld has been off the air for 10 months now, and fans still have a while to wait before it returns. While HBO has not yet announced a release date, the series is expected to air in the spring, and so the second season will probably begin in March or April of 2018.
