What ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ Have to Do With ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers: Infinity War ends on a massive cliffhanger that will be resolved in Avengers 4 next summer. But that’s not to say that Marvel isn’t releasing any movies between now and then. In July 2018, we’re getting Ant-Man and the Wasp, and that will be followed by Captain Marvel in March 2019.

So what exactly do these two movies have to do with the battle against Thanos? Will they be completely irrelevant? Here’s what we know about the two upcoming Marvel films and how they’re related to Infinity War.

1. Ant-Man and the Wasp begins in the aftermath of Civil War

It wouldn’t make sense after the catastrophe that happens at the end of Infinity War for Ant-Man and the Wasp to directly follow it but still be a side story. Instead, the Ant-Man sequel is actually going to jump back and begin in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War.

Infinity War sets up the events of this movie by revealing that Scott Lang is under house arrest, as is Hawkeye. In the trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp, we indeed see that Scott is under house arrest, and he, Hope Pym and Hank Pym seem to go on the run.

Next: This character from the movie will also be a part of Avengers 4.

2. It will bring in The Wasp, who will be a part of Avengers 4

One way that this film will set the stage for Avengers 4 is that it will give us a bunch more of Hope Pym, who will make her debut as The Wasp and will go on to be a part of Avengers 4.

Evangeline Lilly has confirmed that she is in Avengers 4, although it doesn’t seem like she’s a key player. “Not very much, so don’t get your hopes up,” she said when asked if she’s in the movie. “Not going to be a ton. But I’m in there! And I’m proud to be in there, and I’m stoked to be in there.”

During the filming of Avengers 4, Lilly posted a picture on Instagram of her with her haircut from the original Ant-Man. So she may be in the movie just in a flashback; some fans theorize that she’ll actually disappear in the snap, which would explain her reduced role.

Speaking of the movie introducing characters, there’s also a rumor going around that Avengers 4 will include a 16-year-old Cassie Lang. The trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp features Cassie saying she wants to be a superhero like her dad, and in the comics, that actually happens. So it’s possible we could see Cassie herself joining the fight in Avengers 4.

Next: This aspect of the movie could be a key part of defeating Thanos.

3. It will further explore the Quantum Realm and could introduce interdimensional travel

The Ant-Man sequel is also going to further explore the Quantum Realm. As introduced in the original Ant-Man, this is a reality that one enters when they shrink down so far that they exist outside of time and space. According to Doctor Strange, the Quantum Realm exists inside a vast multiverse.

According to the trailers, Ant-Man and the Wasp will involve the characters returning to the Quantum Realm, likely in order to rescue Janet Van Dyne. So one prominent theory is that in this film, the characters will discover that the Quantum Realm opens the doorway to interdimensional travel.

Then, in Avengers 4, Ant-Man could help the Avengers hop between dimensions in order to gather the Infinity Stones, assemble their own Infinity Gauntlet, and take on Thanos. This would explain why photos from the Avengers 4 set show Ant-Man with the Avengers at the Battle of New York.

Next: We’ll also likely find out the answer to this question in the movie.

4. It will likely explain where Ant-Man was during Infinity War

Although we know that Ant-Man and the Wasp is set prior to the events of Infinity War, that doesn’t mean it won’t tie into the movie at all. A promo video released in April 2018 suggested that the movie will reveal where Ant-Man was during the events of Infinity War.

What seems likely is that the vast majority of the film will take place prior to the events of Infinity War; however, the very end will catch us up and show where Scott and Hope were during Thanos’ snap.

One common theory is that either Hank Pym or Hope Pym herself will disappear in the snap. This would lead Scott to get in touch with the Avengers and set up his role in Avengers 4.

Next: How Captain Marvel factors into all of this.

5. Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s

The second Marvel movie coming out between Infinity War and Avengers 4 is Captain Marvel, and this one is also a prequel. In fact, the film takes place in the 1990s, showing the origin story of the new superhero Carol Danvers. In the comics, she’s an officer in the Air Force who gains superpowers when her DNA is merged with that of an alien. It will also feature Nick Fury and Agent Coulson as supporting characters.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has flat-out said that Captain Marvel is the most powerful hero in the entire MCU. We also know that Carol is the first superhero that Nick Fury ever meets. The film will need to explain, though, where exactly Carol has been for the past several decades.

Next: The movie was directly set up in Infinity War in this way.

6. It will likely tie into the end credits of Infinity War

Captain Marvel seems like it will tie into Infinity War in a pretty direct way. After all, this is what the film’s post-credits scene was teasing.

At the very end of Infinity War, Maria Hill and Nick Fury witness the destruction of Thanos’ snap. After Hill disappears, Fury does too, but only after sending out a signal on some sort of device. He drops the device, but the camera pans down to show the Captain Marvel logo on the screen.

The technology Fury is using looks fairly old, so it is extremely likely that Carol Danvers gives it to him in Captain Marvel, telling him to call her if he ever needs help.

Next: One actor let some interesting information slip about Brie Larson’s role in the movie.

7. Brie Larson has been confirmed for Avengers 4

The implication of that Infinity War post-credits scene, of course, is that Captain Marvel will play a key role in resolving that cliffhanger. As you might expect, then, Brie Larson has been confirmed to be in Avengers 4. We don’t know exactly how much of it she’s in, but she had at least one scene with Josh Brolin. So if her character ends up confronting Thanos, her role must be pretty significant.

To summarize, then, although it might seem weird that Marvel is releasing two somewhat unrelated sequels after a massive cliffhanger, both appear to have key purposes. Ant-Man and the Wasp will jump back to show us what Scott Lang was up to during Infinity War, and it will probably get him involved in the conflict by the end.

Then, Captain Marvel will jump back in time to provide the origin story of a new hero who will evidently be key to defeating Thanos. This will set the stage for Avengers 4, which will conclude this conflict and set up a new era for the MCU.
