What ‘Blue Bloods’ Bridget Moynahan Said About the Aftermath of Her Breakup with Tom Brady

Actress Bridget Moynahan is known for a variety of roles. Starring in films such as I, Robot with Will Smith, The Recruit with Colin Farrell, and John Wick with Keanu Reeves, Moynahan has shared the screen with several of today’s leading men.

Now portraying Erin Reagan on CBS’ hit show Blue Bloods since 2010, Moynahan has truly achieved celebrity status. Yet the actress would have preferred to skip her time in the spotlight after this highly publicized breakup.

Making headlines

According to Yahoo! Celebrity, Moynahan dated NFL quarterback Tom Brady for three years before parting ways in 2006. Three months after their split, Moynahan announced she was pregnant with Brady’s child. The New England Patriots football player had already started dating supermodel Gisele Bündchen.

“Two months into our relationship, Tom told me that his ex-girlfriend was pregnant. The very next day, the news was everywhere and I felt my world had been turned upside down,” Bündchen wrote in her 2018 memoir “Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life.”

The dramatic turn of events made Moynahan the topic of tabloid headlines, bringing her media attention that had nothing to do with her acting roles.

‘Stolen’ moments as a new mom

In April, Moynahan revealed that going through an uncoupling in the limelight can have lasting ramifications, where being center stage after her split with Brady robbed her of valuable time with her infant son.

“I had a public breakup and then I was pregnant and then I had a baby,” she said of her and Brady’s son, John Edward Thomas Moynahan. “And those moments were kind of stolen from me by the paparazzi, the tabloids, whatever.”

The actress revealed that she had no refuge from the media at the time. “I would have cars following me, and men hiding in the bushes outside my house,” she said, according to People. “As a new mother, you want to just protect your child. That kind of attention felt like a threat.”

Moynahan noted that the unwanted scrutiny negatively affected her, where she still struggles with the lingering impact. “If I was going into a public space still or walking through the streets, sometimes I change my posture or hide a little bit because of that period of time,” the Blue Bloods actress said. “Because of that attention that was unwanted.”

At the time, Moynahan was still finding her footing as a single mom. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2008, she shared how she was managing the road of motherhood on her own, choosing to focus on the gift of her baby boy. “Going through that traumatic time of being heartbroken and then being pregnant turned my whole life upside down and inside out and just knocked the wind out of me,” Moynahan said. “But I got so much out of that… now I have a child, and it’s the best thing in the world.”

Shoe therapy

In her book “Our Shoes, Our Selves,” Moynahan and co-author Amanda Benchley spoke to 40 accomplished women on the memories connected to their most meaningful pair of shoes. The Blue Bloods star revealed that she had her own story of empowerment that was inspired by some fetching footwear when she was in the midst of her time in the tabloids.

“One time I was followed to the mall, and I snuck around and found myself in a store. I was trying to buy some time that maybe I lost this person and I ended up in the shoe department,” Moynahan explained. “I saw these boots, and I think they really reminded me of who I was before all this stuff happened and before the attention.”

The motorcycle boots she discovered at Barney’s gave Moynahan a sort of renewal. “I thought, that’s what I need. Let me get a little bit of my ‘New York’ back, a little armor,” she said.

Moynahan is now married to Andrew Frankel since 2015 and successfully co-parenting with Brady, who wed Bündchen in 2009 and later welcomed two children together. The actress found her involvement in the book to be healing. “I feel like this project has kind of shown that to me that I still unconsciously carried that around with me,” Moynahan said, as reported by Yahoo! Entertainment. “And so I’m still working through that and kind of shedding that now.”
