What ‘CBS This Morning’s’ Gayle King Says About the Prince Harry/Meghan Markle Private Jet Drama
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle clearly have a fan in Gayle King of CBS This Morning. The royal couple recently received some backlash on their choice of transportation, prompting the famous news anchor to speak up in their defense.
A birthday trip
According to Entertainment Tonight, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex took a private jet to Ibiza, Spain with their 3-month-old son Archie to celebrate Meghan’s birthday earlier this month. After spending six days at a private villa on the island, the couple jetted to the south of France on another private plane.
This did not seem to sit well with public opinion, seeing their choice of transportation as unnecessarily extravagant. Bringing further scrutiny to their luxurious mode of travel were recent photos of Prince William and Kate Middleton taking a commercial flight for their trip from Norwich, England to Aberdeen, Scotland with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, as reported by Harper’s Bazaar.
A gift from a famous friend
King, lead anchor of CBS This Morning has been vocal in her support of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, acknowledging the overwhelming amount of attention the couple gets on a constant basis. The criticism they received about taking a private plane prompted the journalist to comment on their behalf. “Harry and Meghan are entitled to go on vacation. Elton John offered to fly them on his private plane to his private home,” she said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “Elton John also said that he had paid the cost of the carbon footprint for whatever was taken up in that and so the fact that they are being hammered because they took a friend’s private plane who took care of all the costs is ridiculous to me. Do you think any of the royals are flying commercial on a regular basis? I’ll go first. No. So why are Meghan and Harry being singled out? I just think people think that they are easy targets.”
King was correct about the invite from John, who had immediately taken to Twitter to defend the royal couple after the drama started to swirl. “I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week,” John tweeted. “Prince Harry’s Mother’ Diana Princess of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death.”
The famed musician went on to explain why he had provided his private plane to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home. To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight,” he continued on Twitter, calling attention to a criticism Prince Harry had received after advocating environmental conservation, as reported by Entertainment Tonight. “To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint. I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis.”
King defends the royals
The CBS This Morning anchor felt that many don’t realize what the young royal couple face together having their every move scrutinized by the media and the public. “I think people don’t really appreciate and understand what the two of them have together,” King said. “And I think, dare I say, that people are a little jealous out there and there are a lot of haters out there, but what I hope is that it doesn’t change them, because they are both trying to do good in the world, want to do good in the world and they are really good people.”
King also admitted the negativity can get under her skin. “I think it’s silly that they are under attack for doing something and being criticized when they did nothing wrong. So it sort of makes me gnash my teeth to powder, to be honest with you,” she said.
The royal couple clearly has a ‘King’ in their corner!
