What Did ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Denise Richards Say About Ex Charlie Sheen at the Reunion?
Denise Richards of Bravo TV’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills recently spoke on a host of topics at the reality series’ highly anticipated reunion show. One of those subjects was her ex-husband, actor Charlie Sheen.
Quite a history
According to Us Weekly, the two met on the set of National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1 in the early 1990s. They got in engaged in late 2001 and married less than six months later. Richards filed for divorce for the first time in March 2005, but the couple considered reconciliation with marital counseling. She filed again in April 2006, and their divorce was finalized in November of that year. Their marriage produced two daughters: Sam, 15, and Lola, 14.
Their road to divorce was not a smooth one, with Richards getting a restraining order against Sheen, saying that he had physically and verbally abused and threatened to kill her, as reported by USA Today. The two also became embroiled in a custody battle, but later were able to put their differences aside for the sake of their daughters, according to Us Weekly.
Richards did not fight for more money in their divorce settlement. “I didn’t have a prenup with Charlie,” she said on the reunion show. “And, you know, he got Two and a Half Men while we were married, and he had a big portion of that show. He made a lot of money off it.”
A wild ride
Sheen has a highly publicized history of excessive drinking, drug use, run-ins with the law, and erratic behavior. Through the years Richards has been in and out of Sheen’s life, hoping to keep a civil relationship for their children. When Richards spoke at the reunion, she described Sheen’s reaction of her becoming a member of the Real Housewives team, mentioning some of his off-color behavior. “He was very supportive when I told him I was doing it. There were a couple things I said that he wasn’t super happy about,” Richards shared on the reunion show. “I said that there was a time he brought — he called her ‘lady of the night’ — a hooker, a prostitute, whatever she is, [to Thanksgiving], and she was lovely. I said, ‘Well, I didn’t know it was a secret. You’ve been so public and open about your ladies of the night,’ and he goes, ‘Well, I’m in a different place.’ I go, ‘But people love you because you are honest, and that is a big part of your past.’”
She also spoke of how she has tried to protect her daughters when Sheen has opened himself up to negative press. “He’s my daughters’ dad and we’ve been divorced for 14 years. Everything was so crazy. It did get crazier [after our divorce], and I didn’t want our daughters to be privy to anything that was negative, to anything that was going on in his life,” she said, according to Us Weekly.
Richards talked about Sheen’s HIV diagnosis, which he revealed on the Today Show in 2015. She shared with her co-stars on the reality show that she received negative responses when she chose to be a part of Sheen’s support system. “The kids did not know at that point. I moved in the neighborhood where he was living, and being that close to him, it was very hard. But anytime that something would go on at the house or with him, he knew he could call me at 2 in the morning and I would be there — no matter what,” Richards said. “A lot of people judged me for that, but I wanted him to be the best dad he could be, for him, for our girls, and preserve that because I have such an amazing relationship with my father. So that’s why I always did that.”
Co-parenting and remarriage
The reality star still makes a point of staying positive about her ex, especially when it comes to her children. “I’m not a saint and I do my best and I’ve made a lot of mistakes with Charlie, but I think it’s best to not talk in such a negative manner about your children’s father because they’re the ones that suffer ultimately,” she said.
Richards has since remarried, tying the knot with Aaron Phypers in September 2018, according to Bustle. She told her co-stars at the reunion that Sheen has a good rapport with her new husband. “They actually do get along. And when we got married, Aaron called Charlie to let him know that we were getting married, just out of respect, that he was going to be a stepdad to our girls. They get along,” Richards said.
Viewers will find out what else unfolds on the reunion show when the second part airs on Bravo TV July 23!
