Kate Gosselin is coming back to TV. The 43-year-old mom of eight will appear in a new TLC reality TV show, Kate Plus Date, about her quest to find love. Previously, she starred in Jon and Kate Plus 8 (later Kate Plus 8) from 2007 to 2017.
On the show, a matchmaker will set Gosselin up on blind dates. But don’t expect any wild antics like you might see on other dating shows. The “G-rate” Kate Plus Date will definitely be family friendly.
“It was important for me that my kids could watch the show and not feel cringe-y or uncomfortable,” Gosselin said during a recent Television Critics Association panel discussion about the show.
What her kids have to say about the show
While the Kate Plus Date will focus on Gosselin’s efforts to find a new man (she and Jon Gosselin divorced in 2009 after 10 years of marriage), viewers will also get a glimpse of her kids. Eighteen-year-old twins Mady and Cara will be on hand to help their mom navigate the dating pool. They’ll be “weighing in and helping me out,” Gosselin explained.
Apparently, Gosselin’s kids think it’s high time that she started dating again.
“We’ve been nudging her to date for years,” Mady said at the TCA event. “We’re all, all eight of us, are so glad that she finally is.”
“She deserves to be happy. Everyone deserves to be happy,” Mady added.
It’s a different kind of dating show
Most dating shows focus on younger people without kids who are looking for romance. Gosselin says her show will show a different side of modern dating.
“There’s no other mom dating show out there,” Gosselin explained. “I have five daughters and three sons, and they need to be able to watch a respectful … G-rated show,” she added. “And it’s important for me to be an example to my kids.”
Why Kate decided to return to TV
In an interview with People last year, Gosselin explained one of the reasons she decided to document her dating journey for the cameras: safety.
“If I’m going to date someone, I can’t just go out on a date — it’s creepy to me to think of just going out somewhere with some stranger, and so I actually feel like doing it like this is the best and safest way for me to go on a date — a camera crew will be there! I’ll be safe!” she said. “And the person will have been vetted by a matchmaker.”
The realization that her kids were growing up also spurred Gosselin to try dating again.
“As we’re talking about Mady and Cara going off to college which is becoming more and more of a reality, it’s gonna happen, it almost became like a worry for them, too, like ‘Mommy, you’re gonna be all alone soon,’ ” Gosselin explained.
“[I[ started picturing myself sitting in a rocking chair, knitting, and words like ‘old maid’ and ‘spinster’ started to come to mind, and I realized that no, I don’t want that to be my fate,” she added.
Will the Gosselin twins get their own show?
Kate two oldest daughters are growing up fast. Last fall, they began their senior year of high school, and they turned 18 in October. The pair now each have their own public Instagram accounts, though only Mady has posted any content.
Mom Kate even suggested that the girls might get their own reality TV show when they head off to college next year, though she added “that’s absolutely up to them.”
Kate Plus Date will premiere in June 2019 on TLC.
