Prince William Has the Sweetest Nickname for Queen Elizabeth
In public, nicknames are a no-no in the royal family. However, behind closed doors, members of the monarchy don’t call each other by their official royal titles. Instead, the royal family has a collection of sweet, endearing nicknames for each other — many of which belong to Queen Elizabeth.
As it turns out, the queen actually has many nicknames given to her by her family members. But, none quite compare to the adorable nickname Prince William gave his grandmother when he was a young boy. What does Prince William call the queen? Find out, ahead.
What does Prince William call the queen
According to gossip columnist Richard Kay, Prince William had a hard time saying “Granny” when he was a little boy. The columnist told Daily Mail that one time, after Prince William fell down at Buckingham Palace, the young royal cried out for someone named “Gary.” When royal aides asked, “Who is Gary?” The queen allegedly confirmed that she in fact was Gary and explained how he hadn’t mastered “Granny” quite yet.
It’s unclear whether or not Prince William actually still calls Queen Elizabeth Gary, but wouldn’t that be amazing if he did? Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie, and other members of the royal family allegedly call their grandmother “Granny” so it wouldn’t surprise us if Prince William does the same.
Queen Elizabeth’s nicknames
In addition to Gary and Granny, Queen Elizabeth has quite a handful of nicknames. Like his father, Prince George also came up with a sweet nickname for his great-grandmother. According to reports, the young prince — and his sister, Princess Charlotte — calls Queen Elizabeth “Gan Gan.” That said, Gan Gan isn’t exactly unique to Queen Elizabeth. PopSugar reports that “Gan Gan” is a name used by Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry to address their great-grandmothers. With the next generation of royals, the nickname has become a royal name tradition.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren aren’t the only creative ones in the family. Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI used to call her “Lilibet,” which was inspired by the way the then-princess pronounced her name as a little girl. Prince Philip also has a sweet nickname for the love of his life. The Duke of Edinburgh allegedly calls Her Majesty “Cabbage.” And, Meghan Markle takes after Princess Diana and calls her grandmother-in-law “Mama.”
Royal family nicknames
Queen Elizabeth isn’t the only one with cute nicknames. Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and other members of the royal family have nicknames of their own.
Prince William and Kate Middleton
For most of his life, Prince William has been known as “Wills” by members of the royal family. Additionally, his mother used to call him “Wombat.” Prince William allegedly calls Kate Middleton “Babykins.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also have nicknames for each other. The Duchess of Sussex apparently calls her husband “my love” and Prince Harry calls Meghan “Meg.”
The future king also has an adorable nickname, given to him by his beloved grandchildren. The Prince of Wales apparently goes by “Grandpa Wales.”
