What Donald and Melania Trump Gave Meghan Markle and Prince Harry as a Wedding Gift

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The royal couple tied the knot on May 19, 2018, with public figures from David and Victoria Beckham to Oprah in attendance.

Even though President Donald Trump wasn’t among those in the crowd, he and Melania Trump seem to want to keep the peace. Despite having a bumpy past with the royal family, here’s what Trump said about Harry and Markle (page 5), as well as the gift he and the first lady sent to the newlyweds for their big day (page 6).

As much as Donald and Melania may have wanted to, they didn’t get an invite to the royal wedding. However, Harry and Markle weren’t necessarily snubbing the first couple. According to a Kensington Palace spokesman, no political leaders were invited to attend.

“It has been decided that an official list of political leaders — both UK and international — is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding,” the spokesman announced before they tied the knot. “Her Majesty’s Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household.”

2. Markle has voiced that she isn’t a fan of Trump

Even though the Trumps were among the political leaders who were excluded from the royal wedding, Markle was probably secretly happy not to have the president in attendance. Before she became royalty, Markle publicly condemned Trump.

As a guest on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore in 2016, she referred to him as “divisive” and “misogynistic.” She also expressed, “It’s really the moment that I go, we film Suits in Toronto and I might just stay in Canada. I mean come on, if that’s reality we are talking about, come on, that is a game changer in terms of how we move in the world here.”

3. Trump hasn’t had the best relationship with the royals

Markle isn’t the only royal who has Trump on their bad side. Although royal protocol keeps the family from discussing their political views, he’s been rubbing them the wrong way for years. Back in the ‘90s, when Princess Diana and Prince Charles announced their separation, Trump didn’t hesitate from swooping in. He tried to win over the princess by “[bombarding Diana] at Kensington Palace with massive bouquets of flowers, each worth hundreds of pounds,” according to The Sun.

It’s no surprise that BBC TV presenter Selina Scott claimed Trump gave Diana “the creeps.” Even after Diana’s tragic death in 1997, Trump and Howard Stern joked that he “could’ve nailed her,” but that he would have forced her to take an HIV test first.

Then, in 2012, when paparazzi sold photos of Kate Middleton sunbathing topless in the south of France, Trump sided against the duchess. He tweeted, “Kate Middleton is great–but she shouldn’t be sunbathing in the nude–only herself to blame.” He added, “Who wouldn’t take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing. Come on Kate!”

4. Tensions have been high between Trump and Britain

Trump’s gotten on more than just the royal family’s bad side. Tensions have become high between the U.S. president and and the U.K. government — and they’ve spoken out against him.

The London mayor was against Trump making an official state visit, and prior to his presidency, parliament considered banning him from Britain altogether. British Prime Minister Theresa May even called him out for retweeting videos with anti-Islam rhetoric in November 2017.

Despite the clear disconnect between Trump and the royal family, he obviously wanted to get on their good side. In an interview with Piers Morgan, he called Harry and Markle “a lovely couple” and wished them well. This even came after hearing of Markle’s past criticisms of him, which was out of character for the president.

“I want them to be happy, I really want them to be happy,” he claimed.

What’s more, Donald and Melania actually got the royal couple a gift for their wedding day. Even though they didn’t receive an invitation, the Trumps made a contribution to charity as a gift to the newlyweds.

The Trumps’ contribution to charity was exactly what Harry and Markle asked of their guests. “Prince Harry & Ms. Meghan Markle are incredibly grateful for the goodwill they have received since their engagement and have asked that anyone who might wish to mark the occasion of their wedding considers giving to charity, instead of sending a gift,” Kensington Palace announced prior to the wedding.

According to Entertainment Tonight, Donald and Melania donated to one of the charities Harry and Markle selected. Those included, “sport for change, women’s empowerment, environmental conservation, HIV, and the Armed Forces.”
