What Fans Need to Know About ‘Frozen 2’

Disney’s Frozen 2 is right around the snow-covered corner!

The highly anticipated sequel to the 2013 Disney classic will be released in theaters in November, six years after the original. This flick will be the very first theatrically released Disney princess film ever. Very little is known about the upcoming film since Disney confirmed the release of a sequel in 2015. In June, Disney released a mysterious trailer for the upcoming movie complete with gorgeous animation, stunning visuals, and… a magical water horse?

Everyone can’t let go of their excitement for the newest Disney animated feature! So, what do we know about Frozen 2 so far and what can we expect from our return to Arendelle?

Where did ‘Frozen’ leave us?

The ending of the original Frozen revealed that love, quite literally, is the only thing that will thaw a frozen heart as well as a frozen kingdom. Queen Elsa has finally stopped being afraid of her powers and has started to embrace them, using them to create rather than destroy. The evil Prince Hans has been arrested and exiled from Arendelle. Princess Anna and Kristoff are together at last. Olaf the talking snowman has his own snow flurry to survive the summer and spring. Everyone lived happily ever after.

“[Elsa] had such a dramatic journey, and at the end, she’s just starting to feel like she can open up and have some fun again,” Frozen co-director Chris Buck told Fandango.

In the animated short Frozen Fever, we get a glimpse of how Elsa’s personality has changed now that she has let go of her fears and learned to thrive.

“That’s what was really good about the short — we could have fun with Elsa. And that personality… you will see in the next one,” said Buck.

What’s the story?

Now that Elsa has control of her powers, what is in store for Frozen 2

As it turns out, very few details have been released regarding the plot of Frozen 2, but here’s what we do know:

The sequel is taking place three years after the original. Elsa, Anna, and the gang are on a mission to find out where Elsa’s powers came from in order to save Arendelle. In the trailer, a troll warns Elsa that “the past is not what it seems” and tells her to “go north, across the enchanted lands and into the unknown.”

In this adventure, the stakes seem to be much higher. A troll warns Anna, “We have always feared Elsa’s powers were too much for this world. Now we must hope they are enough.”

What could be more powerful than Elsa’s ice powers? What dangers will the group discover in the unknown?

There are a ton of fan theories floating around, like how Elsa and Anna may not be biological sisters or that Anna might have powers of her own.

Is the original cast returning?

The cast from the original Frozen will be returning to Frozen 2. Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell will be returning as Queen Elsa and Princess Anna. Jonathan Groff will be reprising his role as Kristoff and Josh Gad will be returning as the adorable living snowman, Olaf. Santino Fontana will also be returning as the dastardly Prince Hans.

Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown will join the team as Iduna and a character who has yet to be named still, respectively.

Is Elsa getting a girlfriend?

Queen Elsa is one of the few Disney princesses without a love interest. Frozen fans everywhere have been dying to see Elsa with a female love interest. Idina Menzel has given her thoughts during an interview with Entertainment Tonight

“I think it’s great. Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out,” said Menzel.

Co-director Jennifer Lee has been secretive on the subject as well, only divulging a little bit to The Huffington Post

“For me…Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go,” said Lee.

Frozen 2 will hit theaters on Nov. 22.
