What ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Alum, ‘Killing Eve’ Star Sandra Oh Says On Having Children

Sandra Oh is one of today’s most-watched celebrities. Her role on Grey’s Anatomy for ten seasons as the fearless cardiologist Dr. Cristina Yang lives on in syndicated infamy, where fans are still burning a candle for her character to return to the show. Now starring in the BBC America series Killing Eve to rave reviews and a strong fan base, Oh is considered one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actresses.

The Golden Globe Award-winning actress recently spoke on her career and current notoriety, including some comments on having children.

At her peak

Oh has been a famous face ever since she appeared in the highly acclaimed film Sideways in 2004. According to Marie Claire, she also had a role for seven seasons of the HBO comedy Arli$. Her true big break came with her role on Grey’s Anatomy, cementing her celebrity status.

Yet since leaving behind the beloved character of Dr. Cristina Yang on the ABC medical drama after the season finale in 2014, Oh’s star has kept rising. With her title role on Killing Eve, Oh has hit superstardom. She became the first Asian woman to earn a Best Actress Emmy Award nomination in 2018, and landed on Time’s coveted “Most Influential People of 2019” list.

Though Oh is no stranger to Hollywood, she likes the idea of her professional peak happening later in life. “I’m grateful that it’s happened at 47, because I’ve done enough work on myself to really experience it,” she told Marie Claire. “And then, too, it just has deeper meaning for me.”

Personal life

The actress is very private when it comes to her personal life, rarely offering any details on family or romantic relationships. Oh was married to Sideways director Alexander Payne from 2003 to 2006, according to Vogue. When news broke of their divorce and began appearing in the tabloids, Oh chose to turn a blind eye.

“I don’t listen to this stuff. I don’t see it,” she told Marie Claire in a 2007 interview. “I tell my people I don’t want to know about it, because while rationally you might know it’s ridiculous, it can hurt your feelings. It can knock me off from being my authentic self.” Vogue reports that Oh is rumored to be dating Russian artist Lev Rukhin, though the actress will only confirm that she has a serious boyfriend.

Oh, that subject …

The Killing Eve star did not have any children from her marriage to Payne, and was recently asked about starting a family. “I went through that period, I’d say in my mid to late 30s into 40, where it was like, I make a great living and I could do this on my own,” she told Marie Claire in her recent interview. “And I didn’t. I have an extremely fulfilling life as an aunt, not only to my nieces and my nephews but also to a lot of my friends’ children.”

Now, the actress focuses on maintaining an evenness in her life and work. “I know a big part of my job is to rest, do you know what I mean? The output is tremendous, and if you do not rest, you will not be balanced,” Oh said, adding, “And if you’re not balanced, you’re an a**hole.” Looks like Cristina still lives on!
