Find out more about the actor, how he made it big, as well as his net worth.
Firth’s early days
Firth made his film debut in Another Country in 1984, followed by more TV and stage roles. He worked in several stage, movie, and television productions throughout the next decade. Discussing with The Arts Desk his tendency to play withdrawn characters, the actor speculated, “Another Country was a pretty demonstrative character. In fact, because that character was so demonstrative and ebullient, I felt that, if anything, I was going to get typecast that way. Because I played the character in the film who’s a much more contained person it went that way instead. I think that’s the only one really.”
He earned critical acclaim in 1988 for his role as an injured Scottish soldier in the TV movie, Tumbledown. For the role, he was presented with his first British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award nomination. After this, he appeared in films including 1988’s Apartment, Valmont in 1989, and Circle of Friends in 1995, based on the Maeve Binchy novel of the same name, in which the Oscar winner perfectly played the role of an upper-crust scoundrel.
He told The Talks in 2012 on his younger years, “I don’t regret anything very much. Philosophically I suppose I am quite good at believing that things lead you to where you are and that’s the way it is; you live with it and what has happened in the past is unchangeable. I consider myself very lucky in my life.”
Firth’s breakthrough role in ‘Pride & Prejudice’
The role that gave the actor increased visibility was that of Fitzwilliam Darcy in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. Almost immediately, the actor became a heartthrob and was on the cinematic map.
Firth said in an interview at the time, “I didn’t have the slightest clue on earth [who] Darcy was. I hadn’t read any Jane Austen at all, chiefly because when her novels were offered as potential coursework at school, I thought they’d be rather, well, sissy. I had never realized that Darcy was such a famous figure in literature.”
Firth’s net worth
The actor’s net worth is estimated to be around $25 million according to Celebrity Net Worth.
Firth, of course, went on to play another Mr. Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary, a role he initially avoided to get away from what he referred to as the “Darcy business.” He vented to NOW magazine in 2001, “If I spent 20 years training to be an astronaut, the headlines would still say ‘Darcy Lands On Mars!’”
