How Lucy Hale’s career got off the ground
Lucy Hale began her acting work in 2005 by starring in various shows for kids and teens. She appeared in very small roles on Drake & Josh, The O.C., and Wizards of Waverly Place.
In 2007, Hale landed a spot in the main cast on short-lived series such as NBC’s Bionic Woman as well The CW’s Privileged.
But of course, her real breakout role did not come until 2010 when she starred in the ABC Family (now Freeform) show Pretty Little Liars. Lucy Hale played Aria Montgomery, one of the girls in the main group of friends that the series focuses on. During the course of Pretty Little Liars’ seven-year run, Lucy Hale also acted briefly in other places on the side. She appeared on shows such as CSI: Miami and Baby Daddy as well as movies like Cinderella: Once Upon a Song and Secret of the Wings.
Additionally, in 2014, Lucy Hale tried to branch out into music – specifically, country music. She released one album and a couple of singles that charted on country charts in the U.S. and Canada.
In June 2017, Pretty Little Liars concluded its final season and Lucy Hale was ready to move on. She once shared that after the series ended, she did not want to play another Aria Montgomery: “I wanted to something really different from what I had been doing. What has Lucy Hale been up to after ‘Pretty Little Liars’?
A year after Pretty Little Liars finished, Lucy Hale’s new TV show premiered. She played the main character in the CW series Life Sentence, a comedy drama about a terminal cancer patient. It was cancelled by the network and not renewed for a second season.
She also appeared in three movies – Truth or Dare, Dude, and The Unicorn – in 2018.
Currently, Lucy Hale has two films in the works – A Nice Girl Like You and Fantasy Island. The former is a romantic comedy that is also co-produced by Hale and set to be released in 2019. The latter is a remake of the ABC show Fantasy Island and set to be released in 2020.
