What Is Meghan Markle’s Post-Pregnancy Diet?
One thing’s for certain, she’s undoubtedly glad to have her favorite indulgence back: a good glass of red wine at the end of a long day.
“At the end of a long day, there is nothing I enjoy more than a glass of wine,” she told Today.
According to several nutritionists, Meghan Markle has always had healthy eating tendencies. It’s no surprise that she’s shaping up to be an ultra healthy mom, too.
Meghan Markle’s plant-heavy diet
In 2016, The duchess told Best Health that she maintains a mostly vegan diet during the week and then splurges on weekends. According to experts, the loose approach to veganism has plenty of health benefits, especially for a new mother.
“Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), certain types of cancer, and obesity,” says Ginger Hultin, RD, a nutritionist in Seattle and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Oftentimes, vegans can suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. Thankfully, the duchess doesn’t have to worry about that.
“What I like is that she doesn’t have an ‘allowed’ list and an ‘avoid’ list,” says Bonnie Taub-Dix, RD, a nutritionist in New York City, creator of BetterThanDieting.com and author of Read It Before You Eat It: Taking You From Label to Table. “If she is avoiding animal protein, it’s by preference.”
Additionally, Meghan Markle is a big fan of green juice in lieu of a cup of coffee.
“Green juice can be a nice way to hydrate and also take in vitamins and minerals from the veggies,” says Hultin, who’s a fan of the duchess’ favorite combo of apple, kale, spinach, ginger, and lemon.
“With any juice, having more veggie content than fruit will help lower the calorie and sugar content,” she says.
New mom snacks
As a new mother, Meghan Markle is probably leaning on her tried and true go-to healthy snacks.
In 2018, Elite Daily reported that one of the duchess’ favorite snacks is a sliced apple with almond butter and sea salt.
“This is a fantastic snack,” says Amy Gorin, RDN, the owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in Jersey City, New Jersey. “Apples provide satiating fiber, and almond butter offers filling, healthy fat, protein, and more fiber. Salt can accentuate sweetness, so adding a small amount is completely fine.”
Another afternoon treat Meghan Markle enjoys? A cold glass of gut-healthy kombucha tea. Due to the low level of alcohol found in kombucha, the duchess probably gave up this drink during her pregnancy. But just like her beloved red wine, she’s probably thrilled to be back to drinking one of her favorite beverages.
