What Is Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ About?
Netflix’s upcoming show The Witcher is already being compared to Game of Thrones. The comparisons do make some sense as both are fantasy series based off of books. Based on what is known about the series so far, however, the show will not have nearly as many main characters as Game of Thrones did.
Netflix’s version of The Witcher will focus on three main characters, with Geralt of Rivia — portrayed by Henry Cavill — at the center of it all. Joining him will be Yennefer of Vengerberg — portrayed by Anya Chalotra— and Ciri — portrayed by Freya Allan. Fans of the books are very excited to see the show.
What is Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ based on?
According to the showrunner, Lauren S. Hissrich, the show will be based on the book The Last Wish. This book is actually a collection of short stories that introduces readers to the characters and the world of The Witcher. While the first book in the series was published in 1994, The Last Wish was published in 2008 and is therefore more of a prequel than a beginning for the book series.
However, this book is the first Witcher book that Lauren S. Hissrich read and therefore it affected her view of the story. Hissrich told ComicBook.com that she “[loved] all of the books but [The Last Wish] was really [her] entrance into the world.” One aspect that really stood out to her while reading was the world-building. No doubt the show The Witcher will have a beautifully realized world, thanks to its book influences.
What is the story of ‘The Witcher’?
Now, adaptations aren’t always exactly the same as the books they are based on. But there may be some clues to what the show will be like in The Last Wish. In the book, Geralt spends a lot of time traveling and hunting and killing monsters. He also meets quite a few people along the way.
Since Yennefer and Ciri are main characters as well, Geralt most likely comes across them in The Last Wish. They are probably at least mentioned in the book. How exactly Netflix will adapt the story is anyone’s guess. However, Hissrich told Entertainment Weekly that the show will follow the development of a “broken disjointed family” made up of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri.
Sounds like the three main characters might not meet up in the show, at least not right away. However, Hissrich goes on to say that they “really need each other,” which seems to suggest that Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri do cross paths at some point. We’re all looking forward to seeing how the formation of this unusual family comes to pass in the show.
How do Yennefer and Ciri come into it?
Geralt’s role in the story is obvious. He’s a Witcher, which in this world means that he hunts monsters. What about Yennefer and Ciri?
Yennefer is a sorceress, which means she has magical powers. Ciri is destined to be a Witcher and Geralt is the one who is supposed to train her to become one. It’s understandable that these three characters would be drawn together since they all have their abilities.
