What is Prince Philip’s Relationship Like With His Grandchildren?
Prince Philip married Queen Elizabeth II more than 70 years ago and has been in the public eye ever since, however, royal watchers and fans usually just see the serious, non-emotional side of the Duke of Edinburgh. While we have caught glimpses of the queen’s relationship with her grandchildren over the years, we rarely see how Philip interacts with them.
Here’s a look at what Prince Philip’s relationship is really like with them and what they’ve said about their grandfather, plus which of his grandkids he is the closest with.
How many grandchildren Prince Philip has
Prince Philip and the queen had four children–Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. Each of their kids had children of their own and today the matriarch and patriarch of the royal family have eight grandchildren.
Most people can name three or four of those grandkids but in addition to Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, Philip is also a grandfather to his Princess Anne’s two children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall as well as Prince Edward’s son and daughter–Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.
Which of his grandkids take after him
Like their grandfather, Princes William and Harry enjoy polo matches and have pursued careers in the military. Some of Philip’s other grandkids have taken after him in other areas as well.
Lady Louise Windsor, for instance, has developed a love for carriage driving which is something Philip is also a big fan of. He also inspired his eldest grandchildren, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, to attend his old school of Gordonstoun in Scotland.
His special bond with Prince William
The duke has a very special bond with Prince William.
After William’s mother, Princess Diana, died there was a family debate about whether William, who was 15 at the time, and Harry, who was 12, should walk behind their mom’s casket. William was especially reluctant to do so until his grandfather spoke with him about his concerns and asked William if he would walk alongside him.
“If I walk, will you walk with me?” Prince Philip asked him. William agreed and during Diana’s funeral, the duke and his grandson walked right next to each other in the procession.
Philip was also the voice of reason when William was homesick in college and contemplated leaving St. Andrews University. After chatting with his grandpa, William decided to remain at the school and focus on his studies.
These days William refers to his grandfather as “a legend.”
Philip is particularly close with Harry and Eugenie too
Philip is very close with Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie as well.
When Prince Philip retired from his royal duties in 2017, it was Harry who took over his grandfather’s role as Captain General Royal Marines. In April 2018, the Duke of Edinburgh had hip replacement surgery just a few weeks before Harry married Meghan Markle. However, Philip was determined to be at the church to see his grandson tie the knot so he really focused on his rehab and recovery to ensure that he wouldn’t miss it.
“He made a massive effort to be fit to walk into church for Harry’s wedding to Meghan,” said former royal reporter Philip Dampier.
The prince also wanted to see his granddaughter, Princess Eugenie, wed Jack Brooksbank in October 2108 but there was talk he wasn’t going to attend because of his long-standing feud with Eugenie’s mother, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson.
Sources though debunked those reports and said that Philip “absolutely adores Eugenie” and would likely be there for her big day. In the end, the duke did attend the services and watched the princess say her vows.
“I think Grandpa is incredible,” Princess Eugenie said in the documentary Our Queen at Ninety. “He really is strong and consistent. He’s been there for all these years, and I think he’s the rock, you know, for all of us.”
