Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey is a Democratic leader and often an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump. Booker is a New Jersey native, raised in Harrington Park with big aspirations to become a lawyer.
Booker’s name has often been thrown around as a possible presidential candidate in 2020, The New York Times reports. He hasn’t made an official announcement, but the pool of potential Democratic candidates continues to grow as Julián Castro recently threw his name in the ring.
Public service has been important to Booker since graduating from Yale Law School in 1997. He’s spent the majority of his career in public office. And has a net worth ranging from about $600,000 to $1.3 million, according to GoBankingRates.
Booker has had a lengthy career in public office
He began his public service career fresh out of law school. He moved to Newark and launched a nonprofit organization that offers legal services for low-income families. Booker’s nonprofit helped families fight against slumlords and enhance overall living conditions.
At age 29 Booker was elected to the Newark City Council to fight for families in the state on both a local and national level. Eventually, in 2006, Booker was elected to serve as mayor of Newark. And served for more than seven years. He was an economic trailblazer, boosting financial conditions for all residents with a special focus on green initiatives, education, and affordable housing.
He’s served as a U.S. Senator since 2013
Booker won a special election to take the New Jersey Senate seat in 2013. He won a full six-year term in 2014 and continues to serve. And brought his same fight to the Senate, working to update New Jersey’s transportation system. Plus he was instrumental in resident recovery from Superstorm Sandy.
He was also an outspoken opponent of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Booker released “committee confidential” emails from the (then) nominee, Vox reports.
And while Booker has fought to give the voiceless a voice, he’s come under scrutiny for his role as the co-founder of video-sharing startup Waywire, New York Magazine reports. His stake in the company was anywhere from $1 million to $5 million, which he apparently failed to disclose. Booker ended his involvement with the company and donated his shares to charity.
This is where Booker makes his money
Booker makes about $174,000 a year as a senator, but makes money other ways too, according to GoBankingRates. He likely draws about $325,000 from sales of his book, United: Thoughts on Finding Common Ground and Advancing the Common Good. And earned about $1.3 million for public speaking fees, earned while he was mayor of Newark.
He also has a pension worth up to $100,000 from the New Jersey Public Employee Retirement System. Plus savings estimated to be about $100,000 as well.
Could he be the next power couple with this star?
While he hasn’t spoken publicly, Page Six reports Booker and Rent star, Rosario Dawson are dating. Apparently, Dawson and Booker have been together for about a month. And were seen going to a performance of Dear Evan Hanson. On another occasion, they caught a movie.
Dawson and Booker were even spotted holding hands during a performance of “Apologia.” Dawson has an impressive resume too. She starred in the series Daredevil as well as Jane the Virgin.
