Will ‘Star Wars’ still follow the Skywalker family?

While it’s possible that the franchise will find ways to incorporate the original trilogies as well as the reboots, Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker seems like it will be a fitting conclusion to the Skywalker saga. After all, the lead actors from the reboot have officially gone on record to confirm that they will not be appearing in any future movies. So, it seems like it will be time to say goodbye to the characters we have grown to know and love since Star Wars IV: A New Hope.

A fan theory suggests that future Star Wars franchise content will jump into the future, or back into the past. The recent installments to the Star Wars franchise have welcomed the possibility of new galaxies and planets to explore. After all, there are entire universes and galaxies of new stories to focus the franchise on.

There’s a whole galaxy to explore

The Star Wars franchise seems to be building up stories and plot threads to allow the cinematic universe to explore new locations, particularly at the edge of the galaxy we’re familiar with. After all, the upcoming Disney Plus original series The Mandalorian takes place right at the edge of the galaxy. It’s also a recurring location in Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn novels. Most notably, one of the newest Star Wars attractions at Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida will be called “Galaxy’s Edge.”

These details have all but confirmed that the Star Wars franchise will continue to explore new locations and new sections of the galaxy.

Rian Johnson is creating a new trilogy

Lucasfilm has placed director Rian Johnson in charge of a new upcoming Star Wars trilogy. The studio announced that the new series will feature “new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.” Many of the details of Johnson’s plans for the next Star Wars trilogy are being kept under wraps, except for one major detail.

Johnson revealed that his trilogy would stretch beyond the stories of the main characters we’re familiar with. So, the characters from the first two trilogies as well as the characters from the recent reboot trilogy are not likely to make an appearance in Johnson’s new trilogy.

Even though there are many details that are yet to be announced and confirmed, one thing is absolutely certain. It’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan since we won’t have to wait long to return to a galaxy far, far away.
