What Is ‘The Goldfinch’ About? Ansel Elgort and Sarah Paulson Reflect on Their Roles in the Upcoming Film

Ansel Elgort, Sarah Paulson, Finn Wolfhard, and Nicole Kidman star in this upcoming film. This weekend, The Goldfinch premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Since then, fans asked what is the plot of this drama. Here’s what Sarah Paulson and Ansel Elgort had to say about The Goldfinch during a press conference.

What is ‘The Goldfinch’ about?

The Goldfinch, a book written by Donna Tartt and published in 2013, takes current events and puts viewers at the forefront. The upcoming film is an adaptation of this novel and tells the story of a young boy named Theo, whose mother is killed during a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Viewers watch as Theo grows up, watching what happens after a wealthy Upper East Side family takes him in.

“I think working from a book is great like everyone’s been saying because you have source material and you have so much description of your character, especially if its a book like this,” actor Ansel Elgort said. “It was interesting though, on The Fault in Our Stars, the writer was on set, and very often, the director was very humble and didn’t mind if we went right to the writer… On this, obviously, Donna Tartt wasn’t involved at all, and we sort of made it our own and even at times John [Crowley] would say to me, ‘don’t worry about that, that’s the book.'”

One of the main characters of this film, Theo, is portrayed by two different actors. Pete’s Dragon actor Oakes Fegley portrays young Theo while The Fault in Our Stars and Baby Driver’s Ansel Elgort portrays adult Theo. Other actors in this film include Nicole Kidman, Aneurin Barnard, and Sarah Paulson. Stranger Things actor Finn Wolfhard plays young Boris.

“I thought it was an extraordinary story and a moving mediation on grief,” Sarah Paulson said, who portrays Xandra.

Known for working on films like Brooklyn, Boy A, and Intermission, John Crowley directed The Goldfinch. Naturally, fans of the book and of the outstanding cast shared their excitement for the upcoming drama. The film premieres later in September 2019.

Reviews for ‘The Goldfinch’ have been mixed

To say that The Goldfinch received some harsh criticism would be an understatement. Following the Toronto International Film Festival, one of the first reviews published called the movie a “disaster.” Other critics disliked this movie, some stated the acting was subpar, others believed that the story moved too slowly.

“Ugh. The Goldfinch was so bland and boring, I just. I really can’t say much other than nothing happens for almost two hours, then everything happens at once but it’s so disconnected that it evokes no feeling,” tweeted film critic Yolanda Machado.

“Gorgeous and airless. The actors all do what they can, and some — Finn Wolfhard, Sarah Paulson — manage to shake the film out of its chilly self-consciousness. Nothing, though, can rescue the absurdly rushed and busy final act,” tweeted film reporter Adam B. Vary. Still, some fans are excited to see their favorite actors take on these challenging new roles.

The Goldfinch is available in theaters on Sept. 13, 2019.
