Tinashe is receiving some of the best reviews of her career for her first independent album, Songs for You. The singer-actress isn’t new to the industry and has actually been putting work in on the screen and in the studio for years.

Tinashe’s early solo success

Tinashe’s first experience in the music industry was with the pop girl group, The Stunners. She was a member from its formation in 2007 to their disbanding in 2011. Despite making high-profile moves such as touring with Justin Bieber, the group did not achieve much success. Tinashe emerged as one of the few members of the group to have a viable solo career.

After the group broke up, she released several buzzy, self-released mixtapes from 2012-2013, including Black Water. She collaborated with Travis Scott on one of the tracks as well. By 2012, she had signed to RCA Records as her mixtapes continued to gain critical acclaim. Her official debut album, Aquarius, was released in 2014, led by the hit single, “2 On,” featuring Schoolboy Q. The single reached No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Continued success and later trials

In 2015, as she prepared to release her second album, Joyride, she released several singles, including “Player,” which featured Chris Brown. Though she toured with both Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj and was all over the places as far as publicity, landing many magazine covers, it kept seeming like her music was getting delayed. She had a Joyride tour planned, but it got canceled so she could work on the album. In 2016, she appeared on the official single version of Britney Spears’ “Slumber Party.”

She continued booking high profile gigs, joining Maroon 5 on tour. In November 2016, she released the mixtape, Nightride, which she worked on alongside Joyride. The mixtape was critically acclaimed like her prior ones. In 2018, the album was finally released, led by the 2017-released lead single, “No Drama,” with Offset.

In 2018, she announced she would be releasing the album, Nashe, and had released singles such as “Throw a Fit.” Rumors plagued the internet that Nashe was canceled and that Tinashe may have been dropped from the label. Amid all of this, she appeared on Dancing with the Stars. She was eliminated fourth from the competition. After seeming to be on different beats for years now, in February 2019, it was announced that Tinashe and RCA Records split, leaving her to pursue what she wanted to artistically.

Tinashe’s acting career

Tinashe actually started in acting before music. She had a minor role in The Polar Express in 2004 and also had a small role in Akeelah and the Bee. After having roles in several films and series such as Rocket Power, she starred in the Nickelodeon series, Out of Jimmy’s Head from 2007-2008. From 2008-2009, she had a recurring role on Two and a Half Men.

After portraying herself on multiple episodes of Fox’s Empire in 2017, she landed one of the lead roles in NBC’s Rent: Live.

‘Songs for You’ brings Tinashe attention and acclaim

Tinashe’s latest release and her first album as an independent artist, Songs for You, is garnering critical acclaim. It reached No. 1 on iTunes. Media outlets are using the album now as an example of what artists are capable of when they do not have the restraints of labels and industry politics.

For Forbes, Chris Malone wrote, “There’s something for everyone on Songs For You, which speaks more to Tinashe’s artistry than it does her intent: her sound refuses to be defined by traditional definitions, and she’s musically creating a lane that has desperately needed to be paved in the 2010s. It’s a shame that most outlets have already published their best albums of the decade lists, because Tinashe squeaked in at the last minute with an undeniably strong contender.”

Hopefully, for those who haven’t put out their “Best of the Decade” lists, they do not forget about Tinashe.
