Plays and movies starring Cynthia Erivo

Erivo attended a Catholic school growing up before enrolling in the University of East London to study music psychology. However, after a year, Erivo left to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

She first appeared in British television shows, including Chewing Gum and The Tunnel, before making her theater debut in Marine Parade. In 2013, Erivo landed the role of Celie Harris in The Color Purple, the character Whoopi Goldberg portrayed in the on-screen adaptation.

The actress then played Chenice in I Can’t Sing! The X Factor Musical, which only ran for six weeks. Erivo made her Broadway debut the following year, reprising her role of Celie in a revival of The Color Purple alongside singer Jennifer Hudson.

In 2018, the performer made her film debut as a part of the seven-actor ensemble of Bad Times at the El Royale and landed a role in Widows alongside award-winning actress Viola Davis.

Erivo then starred in biographical film Harriet as the title character, which received very positive ratings. The actress will also appear in Chaos Walking and HBO’s series adaptation of The Outsider.

Does Cynthia Erivo have an EGOT?

An EGOT is an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, and the designation given to people who have received all four awards. So far, only 15 people have achieved the feat.

In 2016, Erivo won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her work as Celie in The Color Purple. She then received a 2017 Best Musical Theater Album Grammy Award with her ensemble for their vocals on The Color Purple soundtrack.

Additionally, she and the cast performed on NBC’s The Today Show, which earned them a Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Award in the Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program.

Therefore, Erivo currently has three out of the four prestigious awards. However, her work in Harriet has earned her Golden Globe nominations, which could result in some Oscar buzz.

If she does win an Oscar for her work as the abolitionist, she would have accomplished an EGOT within only four years. Watch the 77th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at 8 p.m EST on NBC.
