You know him from his many hilarious collaborations with Will Ferrell, but actor John C. Reilly is more than just one-half of one of the funniest comedy duos in recent memory. In addition to Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Step Brothers, and the new movie Holmes & Watson, Reilly has appeared in dozens of other movies in both supporting and starring roles.

The 53-year-old Reilly may be best known for his starring role in the 2007 comedy Walk Hard. That movie spoofs music biopics like Walk the Line, with the Chicago-born Reilly playing the role of musician Dewey Cox.

Reilly voiced the title character in both Wreck-It Ralph and its 2018 sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet. He’s also appeared in The Little Hours, Life After Beth, Cedar Rapids, and Never Been Kissed.

He’s also a versatile dramatic actor

Though he often takes on funnyman roles, Reilly is also a skilled dramatic actor who has worked with some of the most celebrated directors in Hollywood. His first screen role was playing an American soldier in Vietnam who rapes a Vietnamese girl in Brian DePalma’s 1989 movie Casualties of War. He also had memorable roles in the Paul Thomas Anderson films Boogie Nights and Magnolia, Martin Scorcese’s Gangs of New York and The Aviator, and Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line.

Reilly’s also played Jennifer Aniston’s loutish husband in the 2002 movie The Good Girl and the husband of Julianne’s Moore’s troubled 1950s housewife in 2003’s The Hours. More recently, he’s appeared on screen in We Need to Talk About Kevin, Kong: Skull Island, Carnage, and The Lobster. Earlier this year, he co-starred with Joaquin Phoenix in the revisionist Western The Sisters Brothers.

Reilly next upcoming project is a six-episode comedy series, Moonbase 8. It’s written by Portlandia’s Fred Armisen and Jonathan Krisel, and will star Reilly along with Armisen and Tim Heidecker. The three play a group of not-so-great astronauts who want to be chosen for the next trip to the moon. The series is currently in pre-production; it’s not clear yet what network will air the show.
