What Passion Drives Michael B. Jordan To Help People?
Although actor Michael B. Jordan is riding high, he never forgets to stay grounded and find ways to help others. The Creed star is now one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood and can be selective with roles.
But for Jordan, being on top means you remain humble. His tight-knit upbringing helps him to keep it real. In fact, the 31-year-old was over the moon when he was able to purchase a home for his parents. Jordan is so close to his parents he’s lived with them in their new home and just recently decided to strike out on his own.
While he credits both talent and luck for this meteoric rise, he makes time to give to others. When did he develop a passion to give back? And what did he recently do to help combat hunger in the United States?
He learned at a young age to give back
During a live auction, Jordan explained to the audience when he found giving back to be important and why. “I learned at a very young age that people who own less are not less than,” Variety recounts.
“The people who we help should not be defined by what they lack,” he continued. “Homelessness is not an identity or the result of someone’s mistakes. It is a result of a broken system, people falling through the cracks, racism and discrimination, a lack of affordable housing, and years of unfair pay.” Jordan, along with WWE star Ronda Rousey helped to raise $2 million for LA Family Housing, Variety reports.
He was also part of the driving force to hire a more diverse crew for the upcoming film, Just Mercy. Jordan is an executive producer and came to an agreement with WarnerMedia to ensure underrepresented individuals would be hired for the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He also leveraged his celebrity for this cause too
Most recently, Jordan participated in a Honey Nut Cheerios™ challenge with actress Lucy Hale and NFL player Rob Gronkowski. The trio competed in the company’s first-ever Good Rewards program. Each celebrity chose a charity and asked consumers to help them collect most Buzzcoin. Buzzcoin was essentially a digital game currency located on the back of Honey Nut Cheerios™ boxes, which corresponded to each celebrity’s charity.
Jordan ultimately won the honor and $100,000 was donated to the charity of his choice, Feeding America®. “My parents emphasized the importance of giving back to me since I was a kid, so when Honey Nut Cheerios asked me if I wanted to help others do the same through a fun competition, it was an easy yes,” Jordan said in a release. “I’m so thankful to everyone who joined and supported Team MBJ. Thanks to you, we’re helping to end hunger across the country.”
Hale, who chose ASPCA, came in second and earned $50,000. The Cheat Sheet spoke with Hale a few months ago and it was obvious why she chose a charity for animals. She’s gushed about her adorable pup Elvis and how she couldn’t get enough of him. “I might be biased but he’s the greatest dog in the world,” she said.“He’s got a human personality and is just the sweetest thing.”
