What Queen Elizabeth Said Donald Trump ‘Ruined’ During His Visit
You know what’s awkward? The meetings between Queen Elizabeth and President Donald Trump. When they’re not kicking off their meetings with unusual greetings, they’re giving off the weirdest-looking body language.
Even so, the two have publicly suggested that they’ve had the most wonderful visits. However, a new report says that the queen has complained about at least one of them behind closed doors.
Queen Elizabeth reportedly said Trump “ruined” one of her most prized possessions
According to the Sunday Times (via The Daily Mail), Queen Elizabeth said that Trump “ruined” her lawn when he visited Buckingham Palace in June. Apparently, the president flew on a private helicopter and landed on the grassy area, leaving behind scorch marks from the engine and divots from the wheels.
She reportedly told Australian prime minister Scott Morrison, “Come and look at my lawn, it’s ruined.” But the outlet reports that she made the comment in a joking manner.
Trump said they had the best time
After the visit, Trump told reporters that his visit with the queen was the most fun she’d had in 25 years. (For context purposes, in the past 25 years, Queen Elizabeth has traveled all around the world, seen her grandchildren grow up and get married, welcomed multiple great-grandchildren, and met a trove of other world leaders.)
“I have such a great relationship, and we were laughing and having fun. And her people said she hasn’t had so much fun in 25 years. Then I got criticized for it because they said we were having too much fun,” he told Fox News’ Fox and Friends in June.
CNN reports that Trump also called the queen an “incredible lady.”
“I feel I know her so well and she certainly knows me very well right now, but we have a very good relationship also with the United Kingdom,” he said.
Meanwhile, the queen has not commented on the visits. However, she has gone out of her way to be polite to Trump, even matching outfits with the president and Melania Trump on one occasion.
This lawn drama isn’t their only awkward moment
When Trump arrived in the United Kingdom to meet the queen, he gave her what appeared to be a fist-bump. As you can imagine, the president faced immediate and widespread backlash and ridicule over the moment.
“Is Donald Trump giving the Queen a fist bump? This guy,” one person tweeted.
“I don’t care about anything else. If Trump really did just fist-bump the Queen we should run the bum outta here…,” commented another.”
But an odd angle might actually be the cause of the confusion.
According to NBC News, Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty magazine, said it was “really just an unusually firm handshake.” Trump seemingly just shook the tips of her fingers rather than her entire hand.
Well, there’s that. But, hopefully, their next meeting won’t be so awkward. We’ll see.
