What Robert Downey Jr. “Wonders” While He Watches a Movie
Have you ever found yourself in a crowded theater, sitting a few seats down from a celebrity? Have you ever been at a Broadway production, during which you spot a TV star in the audience? Have you ever watched a TV show with an aspiring actor? If so, did you find yourself looking over to said person each time something funny or dramatic happened on the screen (or stage)?
There exists a natural tendency to look over at someone who, in theory, would possess an “expert opinion” on the production at hand. If the TV star doesn’t laugh at the sitcom, is it even funny? If the actor seems bored by the production, does that mean it’s been poorly executed?
If you’ve ever wondered what famous actors are thinking while they watch a movie or TV show, you’re in luck. Robert Downey Jr. – star of Iron Man and arguably the face of the entire Marvel franchise – has revealed exactly what he “wonders” while watching a film.
The foundation for Robert Downey Jr.’s expert opinion
If you’re a fan of RDJ, you will know him beyond Iron Man, as the two-time Academy Award nominee for his work in Chaplin and Tropic Thunder. He also won Golden Globes for his performances in Sherlock Holmes and Ally McBeal.
When it comes to acting chops, this man can do more than don a metal suit and rock a braggadocious, self-assured personality (as witnessed at the start of Avengers: Endgame). So, what does the accomplished actor think about while watching a movie? Where does his mind wander?
RDJ sat down with Toronto Sun to discuss the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Avengers, and his work as an actor. During the interview, he discussed why he is drawn to movies like Spider-Man: Homecoming, and what he wonders while watching.
Robert Downey Jr. says, “I always wonder…”
While discussing Spider-Man: Homecoming back in 2017, Robert Downey Jr. explained to Toronto Sun:
“You know why this really works? Whatever the mood board was for [Spider-Man: Homecoming], with all those different tones, it was creatively inspired. It’s really an inspired reinvention… That’s why I love movies. I’m a huge fan of movies and I always wonder: ‘How did they figure out how to entertain me this well?’”
So, it appears that when RDJ watches a movie, he’s thinking about the level of complexity required to reach peak entertainment value. As someone who knows what it likes to be behind a film, he can grasp the amount of detail that goes into creating the experience.
While many critics tend to look for technical factors that audiences have come to deem “pretentious” (to some extent), it’s nice to know that Downey’s outlook remains positive and to the point: he looks at a film and wonders how it’s been done.
It’s quite endearing to think, that after so many years as an actor, he still finds himself in a state of wonder, gazing at the screen, impressed by and determined to discover what exists at the core of the film’s entertainment genius.
What’s next for Robert Downey Jr. following ‘Avengers: Endgame?’
Robert Downey Jr. will be busy for quite some time, as he is set to star in Sherlock Holmes 3, All-Star Weekend, The Voyage of Dr. Dolittle, and an untitled John Brinkley biopic.
In Dr. Dolittie, RDJ will star alongside Avengers co-star Tom Holland (who will play his dog). Robert Downey Jr. will team up with Jude Law once again for Sherlock Homles 3 and is set to star in All-Star Weekend alongside Gerard Butler.
As of now, casting for the John Brinkley biopic is limited, yet the movie will follow the infamous scam doctor (RDJ) who tried to treat male impotence through goat testicle transplants.
