Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot on May 19, 2018, rumors have swirled almost on a daily basis that the former actress is expecting a child. The pregnancy chatter is something that will likely continue until the day the Duke and Duchess of Sussex make an announcement their fans have been waiting for.

When and if that day comes, Markle will certainly have some rules to follow. Like with everything involving the royals, there is a protocol that she’ll adhere to while pregnant. Here’s what those rules are.

What can’t she wear?

Should the Duchess of Sussex become pregnant she won’t be allowed to lounge around in comfortable baggy clothes that many expectant mothers prefer.

Because she is royal she would have to be dressed appropriately, and in heels, at all times in public no matter how far along she is and in which trimester, just as Kate Middleton did during her pregnancies. However, when Markle is not attending a public affair and behind closed doors in the company of her husband, she’s free to wear whatever she wants whether it be yoga pants or sweats.

Will Markle have a baby shower?

Markle would not have a baby shower prior to the birth of her child and there is a reason for that.

“Baby showers are reported to be frowned upon and not celebrated in the royal family, as they could appear to be tasteless,” royal expert Victoria Arbiter explained, adding that because they are so wealthy throwing “a lavish baby shower would be seen as highly inappropriate …There’s nothing they can’t go out and buy themselves.”

Will they reveal the sex of the baby?

It is believed that Markle and Harry would follow in William and Middleton’s footsteps by not revealing the sex of the child until after he or she is born.

This is typical as the gender of a royal baby is usually top secret. Sometimes even the parents want to be totally surprised as was reportedly the case with baby Louis since the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did not find out the sex beforehand.

Will she give birth at home?

There was a long-standing tradition in the past that expectant royal mothers only gave birth at home. However, Princess Anne and Diana were the first to break away from that tradition.

Prince William was born in a private wing at St. Mary’s as were his three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. It’s likely Markle will choose to have her future children at a hospital as well where she would still have access to an army of midwives just as her sister-in-law did.

Who will be the first to know?

The first person the parents would alert about the birth would be Queen Elizabeth II.

Her Majesty must always be the first to know before siblings, friends, and even the child’s grandparents. After the birth of his children, Prince William reportedly contacted the queen via an encrypted phone to share the news.
