The resistance has a few new characters to deal with in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. There’s General Hux’s father, the Knights of Ren, and a band of warriors dressed in red and called the “Sith Troopers.” Here’s what Star Wars fans online are saying about the stormtrooper-esque characters.

Disney premiered their Sith Trooper costume for ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ in July 2019

On July 10, 2019, the Star Wars Twitter account posted a picture of the newest members of the First Order. The Sith Trooper, a kind of stormtrooper with red armor, will appear in the latest addition to the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

“It has some really unique aesthetics to it,” says Madlyn Burkert, Lucasfilm archivist, who co-produced the costume’s exhibit. “And it has some subtleties to previous stormtrooper designs, which I think fans will enjoy discovering.”

“I’m on a conference call listening to everyone discover the Sith trooper news and start speculating about it,” tweeted Matt Martin, a member of the Lucasfilm Story Group. “No, of course, I can’t give you any more details about why it’s called a Sith trooper. (I’m shocked I still need to give this sort of disclaimer, if Lucasfilm wanted that info out there, they wouldn’t do it via my Twitter account.)”

Star Wars fans say these new costumes are unoriginal

Since Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise, some fans claimed that the originality of the movies is gone. The claims, starting with the similarities between Kylo Ren’s helmet and Darth Vader’s helmet, even reached the Disney Parks. Since the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, some say that Disney is using old themes and ideas to make profits. With the recently-released Sith Trooper uniforms, fans again state that these characters are unoriginal.

“Isn’t it just [the] same old trooper but red? No, no it’s completely new, just like Poe’s normal X-wing and his completely different X-wing that was black. It’s totally not a complete lack of originality yet maximizing merchandise,” said one Twitter user.

“How creatively bankrupt is Star Wars right now? The new Sith Trooper is just a red Stormtrooper,” said another Twitter user, “Seriously. They just painted a normal Stormtrooper red. Didn’t change his helmet or anything. Like how lazy can you get Disney/Lucasfilm/JJ Abrams? How lazy can you get?”

Others poked fun at the costumes, noticing the similarities between the Sith Trooper costume and an episode of Nickelodeon’s television series Drake and Josh. In it, the duo dressed as “Red Skynauts,” poked fun at Star Wars and their warriors.
